For the first time since the building opened, the Youngstown State football team held its initial practice of a spring in the WATTS. The Penguins held their two-plus hour workout in the facility on Tuesday afternoon.

YSU, which returns 41 letterwinners from last season's 7-4 squad, went through a fast-paced workout.

The players and coaches were eager to get things going with everyone showing up early for the workout. The Penguins spent the first hour on individual drills before moving onto team situations the final half of the workout.

Head Coach Eric Wolford is stressing that the defense force more turnovers this spring. During Tuesday's workout, the defense intercepted two passes and had their hands on four others.

Senior quarterback Kurt Hess has class during the first portion of the workout allowing reserves Nick Wargo and Tanner Garry to get an increased amount of reps. During the team period, Andrew Williams made a spectacular grab on a deep ball even banging his head on the track while securing the ball.

It was also the first practice for new assistant coaches Eric Gallon, Mark Mangino, Jamie Bryant and Kurt Beatherd. Each jumped in immediately and made their presence felt with their respective positions.

YSU will holds its next practice on Thursday. The workout is scheduled for Stambaugh Stadium, but could be moved to the WATTS for inclement weather.
