Scouting the Penguins: Youngstown State begins its third season of intercollegiate competition and its first as a member of the Southland Bowling League in 2018-19. The Penguins return seven of their nine bowlers from last season, including team MVP Emma Dockery and high-average holder Nikki Mendez. Additionally, Rachel Darrow, who had YSU's top average in 2016-17, is set to bounce back after battling a hip injury most of last season. Clint Daley will be making his debut as YSU's interim head coach after Chelsea Gilliam left last month for another coaching opportunity.
Tournament Format: The Bud Whitman Memorial will be a two-day tournament hosted by Kutztown University with five Baker matches on Saturday and five traditional matches on Sunday. Final results will be determined by total pinfall from the 10 matches. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and Sunday's action will start at 9 a.m.
Tournament History: Youngstown State is bowling at the Bud Whitman Memorial for the third consecutive year, and it has fared well at the tournament the first two times. The Penguins took home a pair of third-place trophies at the tournament to open the 2017 season, and they finished sixth both days in its first intercollegiate tournament to begin the 2016 campaign. YSU set school records for team Baker game average (195.24) and traditional match average (962.20) at last year's Bud Whitman Memorial. Nikki Mendez placed sixth individually last year with a 1,035, and Emma Dockery was ninth with a 1,019. Those were the second and third highest totals for tournament pinfall in program history.
Scouting the Field: Youngstown State is one of eight teams in the 20-team field that was ranked or received votes in the NTCA Preseason Poll. The Penguins will bowl Molloy, Howard, Caldwell, Penn State-Behrend and Mount St. Mary's Saturday in Baker play, and they'll compete against #24 Kutztown, Wilmington, Daemen, Coppin State and #8 Delaware State on Sunday in the traditional format. In addition to Delaware State and Kutztown, the field also features #13 Saint Francis U, #16 Adelphi, #18 LIU Brooklyn, #20 Duquesne and St. Francis Brooklyn (received votes).
