Penguins Reach Horizon League Finals For Third Straight Year

YSU (16-8) won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 before singles wins by Dominika Lackova, Annina Brendel and Sofia Macias Mendoza clinched the win over the Flames (10-11). The win helped the Penguins extend their school record winning streak to 10 and the 16 wins tied a school mark set in 1998-99.
The Penguins will take on the winner of the Detroit-Cleveland State match which was being contested late Saturday night.
At No. 1 doubles, Marta Burak and Julianna Heino clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Keti Mebuke and Oana Manole. The Guins won the first completed doubles match as Lackova and Macias Mendoza won 6-1 in a match against Melika LeBlanc and Bianca Zuzu.
The Flames won the first completed singles match at No. 5 as Zuzu recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Heino.
However, the Guins quickly were able to clinch the match.
At No. 3, Brendel finished a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Manole followed quickly by a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 by Lackova over Jackie Altansarnai.
The clinching match was at No. 6 as Macias Mendoza overcame a first set loss to beat LeBlanc 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Saturday's match was played indoors due to inclement weather in the West Lafayette area. Sunday's Championship match at 3 p.m. is slated to be played outdoors.
