The Youngstown State women's basketball team will try to get back on the winning track when it hosts Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday in the second straight Beeghly Center doubleheader with the YSU men's program. The Penguins and RedHawks will tip off at 5:15 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on 1390 WNIO, iHeartRadio and the Horizon League Network.

The Penguins dropped both of their contests last week with losses to Bucknell and West Virginia. YSU did not shoot well in either game and found itself facing a sizeable deficit early in both. The Penguins shot 23 percent against Bucknell and trailed 22-4 early, and they shot 30 percent versus West Virginia while facing a 21-point halftime deficit. YSU played nearly even with the Mountaineers in the second half, and first-year head coach John Barnes was much more pleased with the effort against WVU than Bucknell despite the scoring margin.

Junior forward Heidi Schlegel continues to lead the Penguins offensively with 22.2 points per game, an average that ranks second in the Horizon League. She's surpassed 20 points four times in the first five games after having just one 20-point game in 56 contests entering this season. Karen Flagg is coming off the best game of her season with 14 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. YSU continues to battle injury problems with just 10 active players on its roster.

Miami (Ohio) is 1-5 with a victory over Chicago State on Nov. 16. In their last contest, the RedHawks led Florida State for a good portion of a 71-62 loss on Sunday in Oxford, Ohio. Hannah Robertson is averaging 12.8 points and is 13-for-26 from 3-point range. Miami also has a first-year head coach in Cleve Wright, who spent the last 11 seasons as the head coach at Gannon. The Penguins beat Miami 76-56 on the road last season behind a 51-31 edge in the second half.

YSU will continue its five-game home stand on Sunday when it plays host to Cincinnati at 2:05 p.m. It will be the second opponent from a BCS conference for YSU in an eight-day span.

All-Time Series

Miami (Ohio) holds a slim 4-3 edge in the all-time series with Youngstown State that dates back to 1976. Each team won back-to-back games in the 1970s, and the teams did not play again until 2006. The RedHawks beat YSU in 2006 and 2007, and the Penguins prevailed 76-56 last year in Oxford. The Guins have scored at least 69 points in their two victories and been held to 60 points or fewer in all four of their losses. YSU is 0-3 at Beeghly Center against Miami.

Scouting Miami

Miami (Ohio) has lost three straight games to drop to 1-5 under first-year coach Cleve Wright, who coached the previous 11 seasons at Gannon. The RedHawks are 0-2 against Horizon League teams with losses at Wright State and UIC. Senior guard Hannah Robertson leads Miami with 12.8 points per game.

Success vs. The MAC

Miami (Ohio) is the second of three teams from the Mid-American Conference that YSU will play this season. The Penguins have won six of their last eight contests against teams from the MAC dating back to the 2011-12 season. YSU lost to Buffalo on Nov. 13.

Schlegel's Notable Start

Heidi Schlegel has scored 111 points in the first five games of the season for an average of 22.2 points per game. That's the highest point total by a Penguin through five games since Brianne Kenneally scored 151 points in the first five games of the 2000-01 season. Schlegel has four 20-point games this season after scoring 20 points once in the first 56 games of her career.
