With the win, YSU improves to 23-9 overall and advances to play at Toledo in the second round of the tournament. Tipoff against the Rockets is 2 p.m. on Saturday in Toledo. At home this year, the Penguins posted a 14-1 mark, and on Thursday they followed their winning formula to the letter. The season-high crowd of 1,803 fans went home happy once again. Playing a full strength for the first time since early February, YSU used a total team effort to defeat the Sycamores (18-13). Five players scored in double figures with Brandi Brown leading the way grabbing 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. It was her 23rd double-double of the season. Shar'Rae Davis and Heidi Schlegel each scored 12 while Karen Flagg and Liz Hornberger finished with 10 each. Davis was proved to be a steady hand late in the contest as ISU tried to make one final comeback. She made six free throws in the final 1:28 as the Penguins stretched out their advantage. Davis finished with nine rebounds and five assists with just two turnovers in 35 minutes. YSU led by six points at halftime, but the Sycamores crept within 34-33 at the 14:53 mark of the second half follwoing a Taylor Whitney layup. But the Guins scored the next four points and were able to keep the lead above three the rest of the night. The last time was at 44-41 with 10:13 left. Leading by three, the Penguins scored the next six points, four of which came from the free-throw line and did not let their lead dip below six the rest of the game. YSU's biggest advantage of the night was 63-49 with just under a minute left. For the game, YSU shot 36.4 percent making 20-of-55 attempts, but was an impressive 20-of-28 (71.4 percent) from the free-throw line. Indiana State shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) and committed 14 turnovers. Most impressively, YSU was 17-of-35 from inside the 3-point arc. The Penguins built a 29-23 haftime lead thanks to some strong defense and cold shooting by Indiana State. YSU trailed 13-6 at the 14:20 mark following a 3-pointer by ISU's Anna Munn. The Penguins proceded to score the next 11 points to go in front 17-13 on Schlegel's first basket since Feb. 21 with 8:15 left in the half. After YSU took the four-point lead the closest the Sycamores could get in the first half was two points, which came on two occasions. The first came when the Sycamores broke the Guins' string on two Taylor Whitney free throws at the 7:15 mark and the second was at 19-17 following two Marnia Laramie free throws. Leading 19-17, YSU scored the next four points before Laramie ended the Scycamores' field-goalless drought at the 2:07 mark to trim the deficit to 23-19. YSU converted three-of-four free throws on its next possession as Brown drew a foul and a technical was whistled on the ISU bench. A Schlegel 3-pointer gave the Guins their biggest lead of the half at 29-21 with 1:25 remaining. In the first half, ISU shot 30.8 percent making 8-of-26 attempts. YSU connected on 10-of-31 shots for a 32.3 percentage. |
