Youngstown -- The Youngstown State men's basketball held an energetic and focused workout for two-and-a-half hours on Friday, the first official day of practice for the 2013-14 season.

The Penguins, who are coming off an 18-16 season and an appearance in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, impressed the coaching staff with their intensity throughout the entire practice.

"I thought it was a great first day," Head Coach Jerry Slocum said. "We had really good intensity and the kids played hard, which is expected on the first day.

Through the layup and box out drills to defensive and offensive installation, the Penguins played hard and smart, which is what pleased Slocum the most.

"The thing I liked the most was how good our basketball IQ was today," Slocum said.

The Penguins' four seniors - Kamrren Belin, Josh Chojnacki, Kendrick Perry and Mike Podolsky - impressed the coaching staff with their leadership during the season's first practice.

"We got great leadership from our four seniors today," Slocum said." We'll see how it goes over the next couple of days, but I'm pretty pleased with our intensity and how hard we played."
