Youngstown State starter Jeremy Quinlan and Wright State's Robby Sexton were locked in a pitchers' duel through five innings before the Raiders broke through in the sixth.
YSU got a run to third with two outs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but couldn't come up with a big two-out hit.
Wright State loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, and Jason DeFevers scored the first run of the game on a fielder's choice. Another run came in on a Penguins error, and two of the Raiders' runs in the inning ended up being unearned.
Wright State loaded the bases again in the eighth with one out, and an error contributed to three more unearned runs. DeFevers had the only run-scoring hit in the inning, a two-run single with two outs that upped the lead to 8-0.
Sexton allowed four hits and walked one while striking out two batters in six innings to earn his second win. Logan Blair did not allow a base runner in his three innings of relief to record his first save.
Quinlan allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits over six innings. Michael Semonsen was charged with four runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
Youngstown State and Wright State will play the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
