Penguins Drop Pitchers Duel in Snowy Contest with UIC

Niles - Playing in intermittent snow flurries, the Youngstown State baseball team came up just short dropping a 2-1 decision to UIC on Friday afternoon at Eastwood Field.

The Flames (9-10-1 overall and 5-2 in the Horizon League) made two first-inning runs standup behind a complete-game performance by Jake Dahlberg. YSU (5-13 and 1-6) had strong pitching performances from Jeremy Quinlan (6 IP) and Austin Lujano (3 IP), but could not catch the Flames.

In the top of the first, UIC's leadoff batter Carl Sugihara worked a walk. After Quinlan struck out Cody Bohanek, Tyler Detmer's single to right center advanced Sugiahara on a hit-and-run play over to third. Jeff Boehm laced a double to left center to score Sugiahara as Detmer advanced to third. Detmer came home with the final run of the game for UIC on a Alex Lee groundout to short.

In the bottom of the inning, Frank Califano reached on a leadoff bunt. However, he was erased on a double-play ground out and from that point on Dahlberg retired the Penguins in order unitl one out in the eighth inning.

Down 2-0, Ryan Cordova doubled for YSU's second hit of the contest. Anthony Rohan pinch ran for Cordova and moved up to third on a Dahlberg wild pitch. Rohan came home to plate the Guins' lone run on a sacrifice fly to right. With two outs in the inning, Jason Shirley walked, but Dahlberg closed out the inning and retired YSU in order in the ninth to pick up his third win of the season.

Just after the conclusion of the game, the snow intensified and forced a postponement of Saturday's scheduled contest.

Quinlan took the loss allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out five in his six innings of work. Lujano had another strong relief performance allowing just a pair of hits with two strikeouts in three innings.

YSU and UIC will play a doubleheader on Sunday morning starting at 10 a.m. at Eastwood Field.
