Baseball Drops Two at Jacksonville State
The Youngstown State baseball team concluded the opening weekend of the 2015 season by dropping both games of a doubleheader at Jacksonville State, 9-4 and 10-5, on Saturday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field.

YSU scored all four of its runs in the opener in the ninth inning after Jacksonville State had built a 9-0 lead.

Both Lorenzo Arcuri and Alex Larivee singled in the first inning but were caught stealing, and JSU scored in the first when Ty Pierce doubled and scored on Paschal Petrongolo's triple to right center. The Gamecocks scored a two-out run in the third and tacked on four more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Jacksonville State scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to go ahead 9-0.

Penguins redshirt freshman Ryan Cordova hit a three-run home run in his first career at bat in the top of the ninth, and Brent Gillespie singled and later scored on Shane Willoughby's RBI single to make the score 9-4. YSU loaded the bases with two outs before Jake Walsh got Frank Califano to ground into a fielder's choice.

Arcuri went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Larivee and Willoughby had a pair of hits to lead Youngstown State.

Taylor Hawthore had three hits and scored three runs, and the top four Gamecocks hitters each had two hits.

YSU starter Jeremy Quinlan allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in 3.1 innings, and Ausitn Lujano and Brad Smith pitched in relief. JSU starter Tony Urban allowed five hits in 5.1 innings in a winning effort. All four of YSU's runs were charged to Jesse Fry.

The Penguins built a 5-1 lead in game two, but Jacksonville State scored the final nine runs of the game, and all of them came with two outs.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning, and Youngstown State went ahead 5-1 after scoring four two-out runs in the top of the second. Arcuri brought in Jonny Miller and Willoughby with a single to right center, and Alex Core delivered a two-run single that plated Arcuri and Frank Califano.

Jacksonville State answered with five runs on three hits and three walks in the bottom half. Ryan Sebra had the go-ahead hit, a two-run single to right with the bases loaded that made the score 6-5.

Gavin Golsan hit an inside-the-park homer with a runner aboard in the third, and Paul Angled singled in two runs in the fourth to end the scoring.

Youngstown State outhit Jacksonville State 9-8 in the nightcap, with Arcuri, Core and Miller registering two hits apiece. Golsan and Sebra both had two hits for the Gamecocks.

Jacksonville State starter Colton Campbell allowed four runs on two hits and four walks in 1.2 innings, but the JSU bullpen was charged with one run on seven hits in seven innings. Graham Officer, who came on to pitch with two outs in the second inning, went four innings and was awarded the win.

YSU starter Josh North surrendered four runs on two hits and four walks in 1.2 innings in a no-decision. D.J. Carr relieved him in the second inning and was charged with the other six runs in 2.1 innings. Anthony Konders, Ryan Krokos and Jared Wight had scoreless bullpen outings.

Youngstown State will begin a three-game series at Tennessee Tech on Friday at 4 p.m. Eastern.
