Junior third baseman Drew Dosch homered and drove in all three runs for Youngstown State, which shaved the 4-0 deficit to 5-3 through six innings. The 49ers, though, extended their lead to 8-3 in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth.
Both Dosch and Mike Accardi were 2-for-4, but the rest of the Penguins line-up combined to go hitless in 22 at bats.
YSU starter Patrick O'Brien settled down after the rocky first inning and kept the Penguins in the game. He was charged with four earned runs on nine hits in five innings, and he handed the ball to the bullpen with a two-run deficit.
The 49ers scored their four runs in the first on five hits and an error, and Dosch's RBI single in the third brought in Accardi to make the score 4-1. O'Brien allowed a double and single to start the bottom of the third but got a big double play to escape with just a four-run deficit. Dosch's two-out, two-run homer in the fifth made the score 5-3.
YSU reliever Joey Gajda retired Charlotte in order in the sixth, but he ran into trouble seventh. The senior right-hander allowed a run on two singles and a walk, and both of the runners on base when he left came around to score. The 49ers got a run on two doubles in the eighth for the final tally.
Charlotte clean-up batter Justin Seager went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs, and Shane Basen had three hits from the third spot in the order. The 49ers finished with 15 hits as a team.
The Penguins and 49ers will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
