West Virginia Beats YSU 7-3
Winston-Salem, N.C. – West Virginia scored four runs in the first inning and got solid pitching to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at Wake Forest.

YSU starter Patrick O'Brien struck out the first Mountaineer hitter he faced, but he allowed three straight singles and a three-run homer to Ryan McBroom. That was all the lead his counterpart, John Means, needed for WVU. The sophomore lefty held the Penguins to one run on four hits in five innings to earn his first win.

Kris Moules had two hits and an RBI, and six other players had hits for YSU. Devin Higgins scored twice and added an RBI for the Penguins, who dropped to 2-5. Drew Dosch was held hitless in a game for the first time this season.

O'Brien did not allow another earned run after that three-run homer in the first. He allowed an unearned run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Pat Shedlock came on and allowed one run in two innings.

YSU cut its deficit to 4-1 with a run in the top of the fifth when Higgins was hit by a pitch and came around to score on Moules' single. WVU got the run back on a two-out throwing error in the bottom of the fifth, and it upped its advantage to 6-1 in the sixth with another unearned run.

The Penguins scored twice in the seventh when Jason Shirley scored on a fielder's choice and Mike Accardi doubled in Higgins, but 6-3 was as close as they would get. WVU got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Penguins stranded two runners in the ninth.

Youngstown State wraps up its four-game swing at Wake Forest with a game against the host Demon Deacons on Sunday at noon.
