Penguins Place 10 on Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams
Ten Youngstown State student-athletes were recognized for their success both in competition and in the classroom as members of the 2013 Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams, the conference office announced Friday.

Of the 10 Penguin honorees, five earned academic all-league accolades for the second time in their careers. YSU's baseball and women's track and field teams both had two repeat honorees, and both teams had three selections total. Five of YSU's honorees were juniors, four were sophomores and one was a senior.

Representing the baseball team, juniors Drew Dosch and Phil Lipari both earned academic all-conference honors for the second straight year. Junior Marcus Heath joined them on the academic all-league team as YSU had the second-most selections in baseball.

Juniors Kendall Homan and Anna Pompeo were both repeat honorees in women's track and field. Sophomore Brittany Stockmaster was a first-time selection.

The men's track and field, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's golf teams all had one selection apiece. Senior John Seaver, also a 2011 selection, represented the men's track and field program. Sophomore Silviu Mistreanu became the first YSU men's tennis player since 2006 to make the academic all-league team, and sophomore Marta Burak was YSU's first women's tennis player on the list since 2009. Sophomore Allison Mitzel, the medalist at the Horizon League Championship, represented the women's golf team.

UIC and Valparaiso led the Horizon League with 19 honorees apiece, followed by 12 from Detroit, 11 from Loyola and 10 from Youngstown State. Milwaukee had seven winners, Green Bay and Wright State each had five and Cleveland State rounded out the voting with two honorees.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits. Voters included the League's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.
