Capacity Group Enjoys Penguin Club Scholarship Golf Outing at YCC

A sold-out 2013 Coach Bill Dailey Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing hosted by the Youngstown State Penguin Club was a resounding success on Wednesday at the Youngstown Country Club.

The outing featured 144 golfers in 36 foursomes as friends and supporters of the university played a best-ball scramble. Presented by Compco Industries, Johnson Controls Inc., Packer Thomas and the A.P. O'Horo Company, it was the 26th annual event held in memory of Men's Basketball Coach Bill Dailey. Rain was limited to just a few drops despite a chance of showers throughout the day, and the outing featured its annual tradition of outstanding food and prizes.

For the second straight year, a scorecard playoff was needed to decide the winning foursome. The group of Ray Briya, John McNally, David Mosure and Randy Barker shot a 12-under round of 59 and won the playoff. Each member received a $100 gift certificate to the Youngstown Country Club. Jeff Houlette, John Moliterno, George Becker and Mike Nicora also carded a 59 and finished second, and Ted Brennan, Rob O'Hara, Bob Wollet and Jim Colella were one stroke behind with a 60.

Becker's tee shot on the sixth green was 3-feet, 6-inches from the hole to take closest-to-the-pin honors. Dr. Mark Billy was just inside four-and-a-half feet from the pin on his tee shot on the ninth hole to claim closest-to-the-pin honors on No. 9, which allowed him to win the Penguin Bonus Package. Dr. Tom Gabriel was closest to the pin on No. 12.

Joan Smrek sank a 25-foot, 6-inch putt on No. 15 to win the longest putt competition. Longest drives went to Barb Geller on No. 5 and Dave Bresnahan on No. 10.

The event, held at the Youngstown Country Club for the first time, raises money for YSU athletic scholarships, especially the Coach Bill Dailey Memorial Scholarship. Senior men's basketball player Blake Allen was the 2012-13 recipient.
