Penguins Lose Home Finale to Wright State in Five Sets

Sam Brown set a new career high with 19 kills to tie for match-high honors, And Lori Vanbeek (11), Lauren Thompson (10) and Sarah Varcolla (10) joined her with at least 10 kills for the Penguins. Nikki Thompson registered 25 digs, and Aly Ryan had five blocks.
Katie Klusman and Megan Hopkins had 19 kills apiece, and Rachel Kremer had five aces for Wright State, which beat YSU for the first time since 2011.
There were 34 ties and 14 lead changes in the match, and neither team led by more than four at any point.
One of those four-point leads was when YSU led 19-15 in the first set following a block by Varcolla and Vanbeek, but Wright State scored 10 of the final 12 points in the set to take a one-set lead.
After holding off the Raiders in the fourth set 25-23, YSU led 7-5 in the fifth to force a Wright State timeout. Wright State came back to score five straight points to go up 9-7, and YSU got within one five different times before the Raiders won 15-13.
Youngstown State will play its final two matches of the season this weekend at Valparaiso on Friday and at UIC on Saturday.
