Five Penguins finished with at least 10 kills, but the Panthers' offense picked up over the final three sets. Milwaukee hit .165 in the first two sets but turned around to hit .341 over the final three.
Sarah Varcolla led YSU with 13 kills, and she and Lori Vanbeek had a team-high six blocks. Vanbeek had 12 kills on a .522 attack percentage, and Sam Brown and Aly Ryan also had 12 kills. Lauren Thompson had 10 kills in 20 attempts, and Val Jeffery posted 53 assists.
Milwaukee also had five players reach double figures in kills, and Maddie Williams posted a match-best 18 kills on a .382 attack percentage. Jess Kalous added nine blocks to go along with her 12 kills.
After a 5-0 run in the first set put YSU ahead 6-3, the Penguins did not trail again and won 25-21. The second set had big runs from both teams as YSU had an 11-3 spurt to go up 15-11, and the Panthers responded by scoring six straight points later to take a 20-19 lead. Vanbeek and Varcolla had kills on back-to-back points to give YSU a 26-24 win.
Youngstown State led the third set 17-15 before Milwaukee scored six straight points behind Maddie Schmitz's serve to go up 21-17. YSU got within one at 21-20, 22-21, 23-22 and 24-23 but could never catch the Panthers. Milwaukee then scored five straight points late in the fourth set en route to a 25-17 win that forced a winner-take-all set.
YSU led by two three different times in the fifth set, with the final time coming at 9-7 after a Jessie Gerig ace. Milwaukee went on another six-point run behind Schmitz's serve to go up 13-9, and the final three points in that run came on blocks. YSU got no closer than three points the rest of the way.
Youngstown State will play at Green Bay on Saturday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
