Penguins Beat Canisius in Four Sets on Monday Afternoon

Aly Ryan added 11 kills, and Lori Vanbeek led all players with six blocks. Nikki Thompson had a match-high 16 digs, and Val Jeffery had 39 assists for YSU, which has now won four of its last six matches.
Katlyn Tyler had a match-best 16 kills to lead Canisius.
The first set was within a point either way before Youngstown State scored seven straight points behind Ryan's serve to go up 12-6. The margin was at least five the rest of the set, and the Penguins led by as many as 11 at 24-13.
The second set was the closest of the match with the largest lead being when YSU was up 11-8 and 13-10. Canisius tied the match at 14, 19 and 21 before taking its first lead at 22-21 on an ace by Julia Hrycyk. Lauren Thompson's kill started a 3-0 run for the Penguins, and Vanbeek finished the set with a kill.
Canisius scored the first 10 points of the third set and was never threatened, and the Golden Griffins hit .611 in the set. Youngstown State rebounded by scoring five of the first seven points of the fourth set, and it never trailed. The set was tied twice – at five and six – but YSU had to fight off Canisius at the end. The Golden Griffins got within one at 19-18, but the Penguins finished the match by scoring six straight points. Ryan's kill gave YSU a side out, and Brown had two kills in the final stretch.
Youngstown State will play three matches at the Country Financial Volleyball Classic, hosted by Illinois State, this weekend.
