YSU Volleyball Adds Lauren Blanco to Fall Signing Class
Lauren Blanco has become the third player to sign a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and volleyball career at Youngstown State University, YSU head coach Mark Hardaway announced.

Blanco, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from El Paso, Texas, joins outside hitter Sam Brown (Chicago) and middle hitter Morgan Tippie (Willoughby, Ohio) as members of the 2013 fall signing class.

"We are thrilled to have Lauren join the Penguin family," Hardaway said. "I think our fans are in for a real treat because Lauren is so dynamic and exciting to watch. Like Brown, Lauren is a six rotation player with strong skills, and she is used to carrying a big load for her team. Lauren is a true student-athlete who excels in the classroom as well as on the court. We expect Lauren to help us raise the expectations for our program over the next four years."

As a senior, Blanco posted numbers that ranked second in Franklin High's record book with 31 kills in a match, 564 kills in a season and 1,539 attempts in a season. She was recognized as the District 1-5A Outstanding hitter this past season, and she was named the Margaret Hussman Volleyball Tournament MVP and all-tournament team two other times. In addition to her 564 kills, she added 483 digs as a senior.

Throughout her career she was named Newcomer of the Year in District 1-SA, Prep Volleyball Honorable Mention, first-team all-district, all-city and AVCA Phenom 2012.

Blanco finished her career at Franklin High School with 1,068 kills, the third-most in school history, and 977 digs. She tied the school record with 127 career matches played, and she was third in school history with 2,820 career attempts. She helped lead the Cougars to district and bi-district titles in 2011 and 2012 and an area championship in 2012.

In the classroom, Blanco earned academic all-state and all-district accolades, and she is ranked in the top 2 percent in her graduating class.
