Cavanaugh, a native of Cold Spring, Ky., had 12 blocks in Youngstown State's five-set victory over Cleveland State on Friday evening. The senior had five blocks in the first set, three in each of the next two and one in the fourth. The 12 blocks were the most in a Horizon League contest this season and one shy of her school record for most blocks in a match. Her efforts help YSU beat Cleveland State in Cleveland for the first time since 1998.
Cavanaugh is the fourth different Penguin this season to earn conference player-of-the-week honors and the third to earn it on the defensive side. Youngstown State is tied with Milwaukee for the most player-of-the-week honors this season, and YSU is the only school to have four different players earn those awards.
Cavanaugh, the preseason Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year, is leading the Horizon League in blocks this season with a 1.47 blocks per set average. That average also ranks in the top 20 nationally.
The Penguins (13-10, 5-3) currently sit in third place in the league standings and have two home matches this weekend. YSU will host Wright State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Oakland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
