The Youngstown State volleyball team won the first two sets and held off a Cleveland State rally to beat the Vikings in five sets at the Woodling Gymnasium on Friday evening.

The Penguins won 25-20 and 25-18 to go up 2-0, and they had five match points in the third set before Cleveland State prevailed 28-26. The Vikings also pulled out a close one in the fourth at 25-23, and YSU buckled down to win the fifth set 15-10.

Youngstown State is now 13-10 overall and 5-3 in conference play, tying a school record for Horizon League victories with six matches remaining. The Penguins won at Cleveland State for the first time since 1998 and beat the Vikings twice in the same season for the first time since 1995.

Junior outside hitter Alexis Egler finished with 13 kills and 17 digs, and senior libero Erika West registered a match-best 18 digs for the Penguins. The Horizon League's top blocker, Jenna Cavanaugh, had three solo blocks and nine block assists. YSU recorded 19 blocks as a team, which was just one shy of the school record for a five-set match.

Freshman Grace Kauth had 14 kills and 17 digs to lead Cleveland State, which dropped to 12-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Youngstown State will return home to face Wright State at Beeghly Center on Friday at 7 p.m.
