Erika West Named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week
Youngstown State senior libero Erika West has been named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 13, the conference office announced on Monday.

West, a native of Painesville, Ohio, averaged 6.33 digs last week for the Penguins. She had a match-best 16 digs in YSU's three-set loss to Valparaiso on Friday. The next day, West recorded 22 digs in a sweep of UIC. The 22 digs were the most by a Penguin in a three-set match since 2006.

West also recorded the 1,000th dig of her YSU career against the Flames on Saturday. West played at Edinboro as a freshman, then registered 312 digs as a sophomore and 404 last year as a junior at YSU. She has 287 through 20 matches this season, giving her 1,003 for her Penguins career. West is the 13th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career digs, and her 3.47 digs per set career average is the fourth-best by a Youngstown State player.

West's teammate, Aly Ryan, was named the conference defensive player of the week on Sept. 23.

West and the Penguins will start a three-match road trip at Green Bay on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern.
