Women's Track and Field Team Takes Second Place At Horizon League Championships

The Youngstown State women's track and field team finished in second place just four points behind Oakland at the Horizon League Championships which concluded on Sunday afternoon at the WATTS.

The Penguins led most of the second day of competition, but a strong performance by the Golden Grizzlies in the 3,000-meter turned the team score in their favor. Oakland won with 159 points and YSU came in with 155 points. YSU took a points hit when favorites Amber Eles (60-meter hurdles) and Jennifer Shiley (400m) could not finish their races after suffering injuries.

Senior Nina Grambling captured two titles at the championships repeating as league champion in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Grambling gained her second consecutive title in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55 seconds. Grambling also won title in the 200-meter dash for the second straight year with a time of 24.48 seconds. She is the first Penguin since Danielle Bolt in 2004-05 to win consecutive 60m dash titles.

Freshman Chontel Fils won the title in the triple jump with a leap of 12.20 meters for her first conference title and a new YSU school record beating the previous one of 12.07 meters.

Senior Shatasia Walker won her first HL title in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.72 seconds.

Jaynee Corbett took home her second crown at the HL Championships in the shot put to break the WATTS record and meet record with a throw of 15.44 meters. Corbett won the weight throw title on Saturday.

In the women's high jump, Abby Jones had a solid performance by placing second with a jump of 1.66 meters and Chenera Lacey was third by clearing the bar at 1.66 meters.

Keishawnna Burts showed her speed as she placed second in the 200-meter dash to clock a time of 25.25 seconds. Taylor Thompkins was third in the 60m dash with a time of 7.68 seconds.

Savannah Osborne helped the Penguins by taking third in the triple jump with a leap of 12.02 meters and Ellie Pollock came in sixth at 11.61 meters.

The Penguins placed first in the 4x400 relay as Taylor McDonald, Grambling, Jayme Ritchie and Burts completed a time of 3:51.78.
The women picked up some individual awards as Grambling was honored with the Individual Scoring Award, Fils was selected Field Freshman of the Year and Corbett was chosen Most Outstanding Field Performer.
