Penguins Have All Around Solid Performances at the YSU Invitational

Duquesne, Bucknell, Detroit, Oakland, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Slippery Rock, Clarion, Seton Hill and Shippensburg were all the teams that participated in the meet this weekend.
Sophomore Jennifer Neider and freshman Jayne Corbett threw the women's shot put and ended up finishing back to back with Neider finishing in second place and Corbett finishing in third place with them both having throws of 13.59 meters. Corbett's toss of 13.59 meters is her best throw of the indoor track season.
After winning her first college meet last week in high jump freshman jumper Mackenzie Sturtz was back for more as she finished in first place yet again in the high jump jumping 1.70 meters beating her personal best of 1.65 meters from last week. Junior Leanna Hartsough also competed in the high jump and ended up placing in sixth with a jump of 1.60 meters.
Freshman jumpers Ellie Pollock and Savannah Osbourne competed in the triple jump for the Penguins. Pollock finished in fourth place with a personal best for the year leaping 10.84 meters and Osbourne placed in ninth (10.72m).
Senior Samantha Hamilton ran in the mile for the Guins for the second time this year and finished with first running a 4:56 giving herself two top three finishes in the mile. Junior Monica Ciarnello was the other penguin who placed in the top eight in the mile with a time of 5:19 which gave her an eighth place finish.
In the 400 meter dash, sophomore Jen Shiley was the top runner for YSU as she finished in fifth place running a time of 58.19. Teammate Alteeka Vanwright was right behind her in the 400m as she finished in sixth place with a personal best time for the year of 58.47.
In her second meet back, sophomore Nina Grambling finished with another second place in the 60 meter dash as she crossed the line with a time of 7.68 seconds. Grambling finished behind Cambrya Jones who is listed as an unattached and set the WATTS record of 7.48 seconds. Senior Alexis Washington also participated in the 60 meter dash and finished in fifth (7.82).
Grambling also ran in the 200 meter dash along with Alteeka Vanwright and both finished with top six finishes. Grambling placed in third with a time of 25.32 missing second place by 0.1 seconds and Alteeka finished in sixth running a time of 25.96 which beat her personal record for the year by 0.28 seconds which was set earlier in the season at the Icebreaker. Senior Alexis Cooper was the only Penguin running in the 800 meter dash and ended up finishing in sixth place with a time of 2:19.

For the men, high jumpers sophomore Jay Jakovina and freshman Arnaldo Morales competed in the high jump where they placed first and second. Jakovina finshed in first place with a jump of 2.05 meters as Morales finished in second with a jump of 1.95 meters beating his personal best by .05m. Freshman William Royal was the lone jumper in the triple jump and finished in third place leaping 13.41 meters.
Running in the mile for the first time this year were senior Eric Rupe and junior Austin Mclean. They didn't disappoint anyone as they also finished in first and second place. Rupe lead mostly the whole way as he finished in first with a time of 4:10 and McLean was able to pull away from the bunch on the last lap as he finished right behind Rupe for second place finish at a time of 4:13.
Competing for the Guins in the shot put was sophomore John Chiclowe, freshman Stephen Lyons and junior Eric Vendemia who all placed within the top six. Chiclowe lead the Guins with a second-place finish throwing 16.16 meters, next was Lyons finishing in fourth with a toss of 15.77 meters and Vendemia finished in sixth place throwing the shot put 15.57 meters. Both Chiclowe and Vendemia had personal record throws for this year in the meet.
Sprinters Robin Hall as well as John Helms both competed in the 400-meter dash. Hall finished in fourth place running a time of 49.58 and Helms ran a time of 50.20 where he secured the eighth place spot. Freshman Marcellus Embry ran in the 60 meter dash and finished with a time of 7.01 which is another personal best time for a Guin for the 2014 season.
Embry also ran in the 200-meter dash where he ended up beating all of the competition to snag the victory with a time of 21.74 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, Hall (22.13) finished in fourth while freshman Josh Lever (22.64) who finished in eighth place.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team ended up finishing in fourth place with a time of 3:21.
Also in action on Saturday, sophomore thrower Connor Neu competed in the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York today and competed in the weight throw where he threw a personal best with a toss of 20.02 meters earning himself an impressive third-place finish.
The YSU track teams will be back competing next week at the SPIRE Division I Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.
