The Penguins (8-11 overall and 4-1 in the Horizon League) fell behind UIC (6-11) after dropping two of the three doubles matches. But YSU played strong in singles to win the match.
At No. 4, Silviu Mistreanu had a successful Senior Night performance cruising to a win over Maurizio Feoli. At No. 1, Remi Chancerel caught fire late in the first set to knock off Isaac Lloveras 7-5, 6-1. Lloveras led for most of the first set before Chancerel closed strong and took that momentum into the second set.
Bassem El Mekawi fought through a sprained right ankle to earn his first Horizon League win of his career. El Mekawi won the first set and built a 4-1 lead in the second before spraining his right ankle. After Carl Hedstrom rebounded to tie the set at five, El Mekawi won the final two sets for the victory.
The clincher was at No. 2 as Hugo Morth battled back for a three-set victory over Chris Cole. Morth won a back-and-forth second set before using a booming serve to close out a 6-4 victory in the third to clinch the win the Guins.
Dawoud Kabli also had a strong performance on Senior Night with a straight set win over Mitch Granger at No. 5. Victor Peirera capped off a successful night for everyone with a 10-7 win in the third set at No. 6.
The Penguins close out the regular season on Sunday morning when they take on Valparaiso. The match is slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the YSU Tennis Courts. A win over the Crusaders and the Guins will be the No. 2 seed in next week's Horizon League Championships.
