Penguins Win League Opener Edging Detroit 4-3

Boardman - The Youngstown State women's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Detroit on Saturday at the Boardman Tennis Center.

For the Penguins (9-7 overall and 1-0 in HL) it was the first time they defeated Detroit in six tries and first win in a league opener since 2008-09. The Titans had their five match winning streak snapped and fall to 5-4 on the campaign.

YSU won the doubles point with Marta Burak and Margarita Sadovnikova earning an 8-3 win at No. 1 while Paula de Man and Lauren Hankle prevailed 8-6 at No. 2.

In singles play, de Man cruised to a win by taking the first set and then wrapping up the win when Chloe Karoub retired.

At No. 2, Sadovnikova earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nino Sujashvili and at No. 3, Burak defeated Irinia Slizovskaya 6-4, 6-1.

For the year, de Man is 14-1, Sadovnikova is 14-11 (8-6 in dual play) and Burak is 19-5 and 13-3 in duals.

The Titans won the other three singles matches.

YSU returns to action on Friday, March 29 when they visit Duquesne.
