de Man dispatched of Bowling Green's Emily Reuland 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. A native of Holland, she joined the program this week and made an impact on Saturday.
However, de Man was the only Penguin to get into the win column against the Falcons (4-1). At No. 2, Marta Burak dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Nikki Chiricosta, Lauren Hankle dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Maddy Eccleston and Annina Brendel lost a hard-fought match to Mary Hill, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
In doubles play, Burak and de Man dropped a tough 8-7 decision to Eccleston and Katie Grubb. In the tiebreaker, YSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the BGSU duo scored seven of the next eight points to get the victory.
Head Coach Mark Klysner was pleased with the effort of the Penguins on Saturday.
"We started a little slow today in doubles, but we definitely competed well in the singles matches," he said. "It's obvious we just need some more matches under our belt to gain more confidence. I would like to congratulate Paula on her first win in her first collegiate match. Not only that also being the first YSU player to beat a nationally-ranked player, which today was the No. 87-ranked player in the NCAA. That's a great motivator as we look to play Dayton next Friday."
YSU (0-2) returns to action on Friday when it travels to Dayton.
