The Penguins trailed their Northeast Ohio rivals 102-86 following the 500-yard freestyle before mounting the rally. McKenzie Stelter (270.38), Bethany Glick (244.50) and Lydia Scheringer (227.78) placed in the top three spots in 3-meter diving to start the swing, and Hannah Reynolds (2:28.64) and Kolbrun Jonsdottir (2:29.44) finished first and second in the 200-yard breaststroke to give YSU a 116-110 lead. Madison Aranda, Jana Janson, Haley Fisher and Zsani Csado then won the 400-yard freestyle relay by more than six seconds to finish the victory.
Youngstown State is now 2-0 in dual meets on the season. It beat St. Bonaventure 186-112 in the season opener two weeks ago.
YSU showed off its versatility as seven different Penguins won individual events in the 13-event meet.
Freshman Megan Stelpflug gave YSU its first victory in the 1,650 free (17:56.99), and YSU went on to take the top spot in the next two freestyle events as well. Aranda followed with a victory in the 200 free (1:54.97), and Jonsdottir was first to the wall in the 50 free (24.90).
Bec Stafford's Zone qualifying score of 265.88 in the 1-meter allowed the Penguins to sweep the diving events, and Csado was 0.23 seconds from setting a pool record in the 100 free with a time of 52.58. Cleveland State won the ninth and 10th events – the 200 back and the 500 free – to set up YSU's rally.
Jonsdottir had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 free and the 200 breast, and Fisher placed second in the 200 IM and the 400 medley relay. Stelter, Aranda and Stelpflug added second-place finishes in individual events.
Youngstown State will be back in action at Duquesne on Saturday at 12:05 p.m.
