Softball Split at Mercer Bears Classic

Sophomore Sarah Dowd went 2-for-3 with a run scored and drove in another while freshmen Stevie Taylor and Kelly Thompson-Cappadocio each went 2-for-3.
Senior Kayla Haslett struck out three in 3.2 innings pitched to pick up the win.
The Penguins trailed 2-1 but used a three-run fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Thompson-Cappadocio led off the frame with a single up the middle and Alexa Schmidt was subbed in to pinch run. Schmidt scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 2-2.
Haslett walked and stole second and Smallcomb scored on a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead. Haslett scored on a suicide squeeze by Dowd.
After A&M cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, the Penguins answered when Brittney Moffatt's ground out plated Miranda Castiglione, who walked and stole second and third.
A&M tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Against Mercer, the Penguins were limited to just one hit, a single by Moffatt.
Youngstown State opens Horizon League play with a three-game series against Detroit, March 20-21, at the YSU Softball Field First pitch on Friday is at 3 p.m.
