Seven-Run Third Lifts Softball to Split at The College of Charleston
Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team used a seven-run third inning en route to a 11-7 win over The College of Charleston in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point.

With the win the Penguins improve to 5-9 overall while the Cougars move to 12-11.

The Penguins dropped the opener, 5-0.

In the nightcap, freshman Cali Mikovich went 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs while sophomore Maria Lacatena and freshman Kelly Thompson-Cappadocio each had two hits. Freshman Hanna Lucas and senior Kayla Haslett each drove in two runs.

The Penguins trailed 2-0 before exploding for seven runs in the top of the third inning. Singles by Lucas and Lacatena and a walk by sophomore Sarah Dowd loaded the bases for Mikovich, who singled to center to cut the lead in half.

A bases-loaded walk to Miranda Castiglione tied the game at 2-2, and the Penguins scored two more runs on back-to-back errors by the Cougars to take a 4-2 lead.

Another bases-loaded walk, this one to Stevie Taylor, an infield single by Thompson-Cappadocio and a run scoring groundout by Lucas gave the Penguins a five-run cushion.

The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to get within 7-4, but the Penguins answered with three in the top of the sixth. After an error and a walk, Mikovich laced a triple to left-center field to score Alexandria Gibson and Dowd and gave the Penguins a 10-4 lead.

Charleston added three in the bottom of the sixth to get within three again, 10-7, but the Penguins added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Taylor led off the inning with a double and scored on Lucas's fielder's choice.

In the first game, Dowd had two of the Penguins five hits.

Youngstown State faces South Carolina State, Thursday, at Noon.
