Snodgrass Scores Game-Winner in Wild Finish, Penguins Salvage Split

Canfield, Ohio -- Junior Samantha Snodgrass, who went 3-for-4, scored the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch as the Youngstown State softball team salvaged a doubleheader split against Green Bay with a 7-6 victory in game two. The Penguins dropped the opener, 2-1.

Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Snodgrass' one-out double down the left field line moved Courtney Ewing, who was hit by a pitch, to third to put the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

After an intentional walk to Vicky Rumph loaded the bases, freshman Kelly Stowe' sacrifice fly to right field plated Ewing with the game-tying run, but Snodgrass also tagged and went to third to put the winning run just 60 feet away.

The third pitch to senior Sarah Gabel, who had a game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, got passed Green Bay catcher Gabrielle Cassady and Snodgrass beat the throw at the plate to give the Penguins the 7-6 triumph.

Gabel, who had two hits, breathed new life into the Penguins (13-20, 7-8 Horizon League) with a one-out, two-run double down the left-field line that score Rumph and Stowe, who both walked.

In the top of the seventh, the Phoenix took a 6-5 lead on a bases-loaded passed ball with two outs. After a walk to Marissa Michalkiewic, an apparent inning-ending ground out to shortstop was called safe and a single back to the pitcher's circle loaded the bases to set up the go ahead run.

Junior Sarah Ingalls gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead with a two-run home run, her fourth of the year, to left-center field in the bottom of the second before the Phoenix used a four-run fourth to take the 5-3 lead.

Green Bay's Tia Collins' two-out, bases-clearing double to center field drove in the last three runs after Miranda Reinke's single to left scored the first run.

Sophomore Kayla Haslett picked up her first victory of the season, pitching two innings of relief and not allowing an earned run.

In the opener, Michalkiewic hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning that carried the Phoenix to the 2-1 victory.

YSU senior Hana Somogyi was the hard-luck loser and allowed just four hits and struck eight. The Penguins offense, though, did not provide much run support scoring just one run in the bottom of the first inning and posted just five hits.

The Penguins visit Robert Morris in a doubleheader, Wednesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. in Moon Township, Pa.
