Youngstown State won a Horizon League best six championships during the 2013-14 academic year which helped the Penguins claim a school-best second-place finish in the conference's McCafferty Standings.
YSU finished with 39.5 points to place second behind Milwaukee's 43. The Penguins recorded 23.5 points on the women's side and 16 on the men's.
The Guins's best finish previously was fifth in the 2005-06 season. Last year, YSU programs tallied an all-time high 28 points. Both of those were eclipsed handily in 2013-14.
The Penguins won a League-high six postseason tournaments, including four in the spring when YSU won women’s tennis, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field and most recently, baseball. In the fall, the women's cross country team claimed its first-ever league crown and in March the women's indoor track and field team won the title.
Additionally, the men's indoor track and field team placed second, as did the the men's cross country team, the women's and men's golf teams both finished third, the men's tennis team and women's basketball teams reached the Horizon League semifinals and the softball team tied for third in the regular season.
The 23.5 points on the women's side were just 2.5 behind Milwaukee for that title. The men placed fifth with 16 points.
Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference’s first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League’s 19 championship sports.
For the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
