Why You Should Attend YSU Men's Basketball's Historic Home Game Tuesday Night In Youngstown:

Good piece.  A YSU win would be great, but after the tourney performance against WSU I don't have much confidence.

Coach was saying a few interesting things about the game plan. 1. We still plan to keep the tempo up, even though Oakland is a fast team. 2. He wants to get extra passes in each possession to press them on defense.

Pomeroy gives YSU a 64% chance of winning and projects a 79-75 YSU win.

Sagarin makes YSU a 3 1/2 point favorite, effectively his home court advantage.

Massey gives YSU a 71% chance of winning and projects an 80-74 YSU win.

They were on the road last year Indy, and they ended up in the CIT final-4.

Good win.  The Guins had to take down a .500 team from their old conference, and they did.  Kudos to those that went to the game.  It was the 3rd largest crowd of the season.

Great atmosphere last night and some of the fans (ahem...) got on the Oakland thugs pretty well. Team played very well and as ysuguins4 said, congrats to those who came and rooted the team on. It does help. And shame to those naysayers, this was a good thing for the program.

Scalzo said area boosters have stepped up again to bid on another home game.  Of the 6 CIT games played last night, YSU had the best attendance.

The best attendance last night!  That is very interesting.  It could indeed serve us well in our pursuit of that second round game.  I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the crowd, considering it was a week night, there was only about a week to sell tickets, and every seat had to be resold to corporate and individual season ticket holders.

I had an open mind about Oakland and the Horizon League.  I now say a resounding "no."  As IP stated, they have thugs, perhaps more than Detroit or Cleveland State.  They specialize in cheap shots away from the ball and out of the sight of the officials (who made the usual Horizon League referees look highly competent.)  Also, Oakland's style of offense-oriented street ball combined with no defense would do nothing for the reputation or ratings of the Horizon league.

0505,

What happens when you take a team that plays no defense and put them in a league where most programs are committed to defense, and where the best teams play great defense?  The answer is that Oakland, as they are currently formed, would win about one road game per year and maybe half of their home games.  As the tenth member of the Horizon League, they would be 5-13 every year.  You might find street ball entertaining but Oakland could not compete in our league without a major change in philosophy.

Yeah I agree but what other schools would be considered that are close enough to join the league?

There are far too many naysayers in Youngstown. Anyone who says this isn't good for the program are pathetic. It is. From where we were when Slocum took over the program, to where we are now, is a significant step.

With the win, YSU now has 18 on the season. They will have a legitimate chance to get to 20. 20 wins is a magic number when it comes to recruiting.

Kent State won tonight (barely) but attendance was listed in the box score as less than 2,000.  Canisius (in Buffalo) also won but barely drew more than 1,000.  Those are the closest foes remaining.  So....we shall see if money talks.

Air Force at Hawaii was the only CIT game from last night with higher attendance than YSU.  I have to believe the Guins will be hosting again.
