Star Track recruit
« on: March 04, 2012, 02:35:23 PM »
YSU signee Jay Jakovina cleared 6' 10" today at indoor meet at Kent.

This kid will have 8 conference championships by the time he is done at YSU.

I HATE MIAMI.  WATERBOARDING IS NOT TORTURE.  ABORTION IS.

I missed a four-footer for par the other day--THAT DAMN BUSH!

He did 6'8" at the YSU qualifier at WATTS on last weekend in January. Over 20'5" on the long-jump as well. In addition, they finished second in the 4x400. Is he a senior? He will most likely be a decathlon for us. I think they call them decathletes/pentathletes/etc. This is what we need to get that elusive men's conference crown. Those events are worth so many points, you virtually have to win in 5 other events just to stay even.

The "bigs" don't start paying attention until you cross over 7' these days. At that point you begin to train exclusively for the high jump. I think the NCAA record is 7' 9.75". Also, if he is starting for a great baseball program like Fitch ...then we may want to recruit him there as well.

How old is he lecture? I see the junior national champ won the event with a jump of 6-11.75  last season. Could be something there. It would be great to be able to snare a national champ for our men's program.

Actually your first sentence is not quite true.  Jay had offers from Major schools, but as with almost ALL track programs in the country, no full rides.

He is getting a full ride at YSU.  And not the livin' and eatin' at home with Mom and Dad.  He competed in the New Balance Invitational in NYC last year and is competing in that meet again this weekend.

Other athletes locally I know will be there   Fitch--Gabby Figueroa  thrower, Boardman--Devin Campbell, Adu-Poku and Nathan Jones.

Jakovina and Figueroa are both ranked #1 in Ohio indoor for their events.

Well, now you CAN'T just leave it at that.  Since you opened up the can of worms, spill it.

I want to know more too.  Good grief this is our best recruit in track & field in a long time.

He finished 2nd in the New Balance Indoor Nationals Saturday in NYC.

National runner-up-- he   did 6-9 3/4 and came in 2nd due to more misses.

Gabby Figueroa from Fitch came in 5th in the weight throw

Both named All Americans
