SIU will be the first reasonably good defensive team that we have faced since Michigan State.  That is not a good thing, considering how badly the offense sputtered against a statistically bad South Dakota State defense.  On the other hand, SIU is struggling to score points in league games, getting shut down by North Dakota State and failing to score 25 against bad Missouri State and Western Illinois defenses.  If our defense was just average, I would feel quite good about this game.  Unfortunately, we are not even close to average.  Southern Illinois: 31-14.

I agree with both, but I think it will pan out more like last year. If we come out strong enough, we can hang on. This is one of those game where I wish we had a power back on O. Nothing against our backs, but last year we were able to grind-it-out late in the game to preserve the win.

I am going 31-28 Guins

Bold prediction Dan :)  Have not made a FG yet this year  ;) I believe we do have a power back but #25 sits on the bench  :o

I should have said that we almost lost it, last year, because we did not have a power back. I am wondering about him being on the bench myself. Have for some time.

We're a spread team....Quick backs fit that. When we start becoming a 2 TE team with 6'5 320lb "big bodies" across the board, we will see the Fullback involved. When we become Wisconsin, you'll see us recruit a Ron Dayne "type".

But I don't know if getting into a "big body" recruiting battle with the Dakota's and Northern Iowa is a good thing to do.

They have more farm land than we do. And they grow big farm boys better than we do. You can't "out-Nebraska,....Nebraska". You can't "out-Wisconsin,.....Wisconsin". Our coaches are doing the "you can't beat speed" SEC thing. And the SEC has won the last 5 or so NCAA titles. (So they have a good argument). Just wish Y-town was located just South of Tampa. (I'd be warmer, and YSU's attempt to get blazing fast kids would be easier.)

Just give this current group of players and coaches some time..... :)

Is that -8 1/2 the "line", your prediction, or just a hyphen?

Our biggest starting LB is listed at 220...very un-MVFC like.

I hope our coaches know what they are doing but we are starting to look like a speed-first team. I'm not sure how well that style will fly in our current conference however...if we're going for faster we better be markedly fater or we're just going to get pushed around.

That being said this looks like a growing pains week for us, but I'm an optimist and will say 21-20.

5 + years now of trying to be a flash and bang offense (looks great for QB's numbers) but it's not getting YSU near the playoff's let alone a championship.  We don't get the horses up in Y-town to act like an SOCON team on offense or defense to cover the offense.  Somehow we get figured out and this league (MVFC) makes the adjustments to shut it down.  Defense wins championships.

??? If there's speed at YSU I can't wait to see it.  If YSU want's to be like the SEC we'll need to get crooked like the SEC and hire pro players to hang around for a few years untill their NFL contract is ready to sign  :o

Even the punter at LSU is faster than most of the players in the MVFC LOL!!

also a great offense beats a great defense all the time

You said it brother. This is the MVFC, this is Ytown. When you do not win it is hard, but how you play the game is important here. The last thing I would ever want to do is watch an SEC game. Might as well be the NFL. Just because ESPN does not get that, does not make it any less true. At night, I flip over and watch the PAC-10.

I think it is more than our style with #25. Why would we lose two opportunities to score, and several opportunities to hold possession by not using him? This is just so far this season.

5+ years and I'm sticking to it.  After the 2006 beating in Boone that's all we heard spread and faster at YSU that is the fix and we'll recruit that way so we can compete with the appy's of the world yada, yada.....

Stick to Pizza's, pizza.  "a great offense beats a great defense all the time" LOL! Ask Danny M how ofter his great "O" beat the Great D's  :o  I'll say the only "O" to pull off that feat was St. Louis and Kurt Warner.  Other than that ???

Alabama, Oklahoma, LSU, & North Dakota State all have outstanding Defenses.  OU is above average on "O" Alabama and LSU are adverage and NDSU did not even get a 1st down last week in Carbondale untill 5 mins left in the 3rd qtr and still beat SIU.  The 91, 92, 94 and 97 YSU Penguins  ;)

Here is the issue, along with some history. I know this is long, but read me out. I am probably repeating myself. YBR is correct. Pizza and 21 are correct.

Tressel converted our offense in about 1988-89. We went from an offense/defesne that was designed to compete in the OVC, to more of an option-based offense (designed to compete as an independent). However, our defense stayed very similar to how it was in the OVC. Enter Coordinator John Heacock. Our offense stays the same, but heacock "beefed" things up a bit. In fact, you may not realize or remember ...YSU set an NCAA DI record for points allowed over an entire season in 1994. I think it was 9.4 or 10.4 PPG.

With this combination of O & D, YSU makes the championship game in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994. In 1994, YSU defeats a very good Boise State team that used (and still does) a combination of West Coast & Spread. Very similar to YSU's current offense.

In 1995 YSU enters the Gateway conference and Tressel begins to change the offense to "compete" in the GFC). Heacock left YSU, for the Big-10, but his replacements kept things mostly the same on defense.

In 1997, YSU made the play-off, and wound-up barely defeating an option-based team in McNeese (lowest scoring game in I-AA/FCS championship history). Interesting enough ...McNeese was rated the #1 defense, and YSU was ranked the #2 defense at the end of the 1997 regular season. {I all but lost my job that day. I had a temporary job at Circuit City, and they were mad that I took a 3-hour lunch to watch the game}.

In 1999, YSU takes their defense to the post-season again; almost defeated by a poor FLAMU club that runs the traditional SEC/Florida spread option ...& is then "smacked around" by Georgia Southern's "new-fangled" triple option. It was a triple with a spread & read component ...the same thing he now runs at Navy.

So what does this history lesson have to do with our discussion?

1. If a defense is expected to defense any offense, they must have seen that offense before. Now what offense does a Penguin defense see all summer and every week during the season? A PENGUIN OFFENSE! So if the Penguins are running the spread on offense, they will be much better at defending any team they play that runs that same offense. Conversely, much weaker defending the power offenses of the GFC/MVFC

So YSU beat #1 Villanova's spread (3-times in a row at that point). YSU beats Boise State's spread in 1994 quite easily actually.

YSU barely beats McNeese's spread in 1997 because the Frosh and Sophs have not really seen the spread before ...as YSU's offense does not run it any more. Yet the Juniors and Seniors (most of the starters) still remember defending the spread & win it for us. {i loved that defense}.

In 1999, we are "kool whipped" by GA Southern's spread because no one on YSU defense has seen it before. Yet, GSU's defense had no answer for Adrian Brown's power either ...until he was exhausted in the second half and we could not win a shoot-out with a Tressel-offense. Even ISU (the Gateway's only option team at that time) almost beat us that year.

2. Heacock did begin the change to the spread O, but it was a disaster the first year. Most injuries I have ever seen. Looked nice under Summers, but we still only had 1 full recruiting class. Exit coach H. This is why I felt Heacock's removal was ill-timed in the first place. I wanted a couple of classes to see the spread. Tressel's pro-set offense is why I was not overly disappointed when he left.

3. If we can somehow get Heacock's limited spread, and his nice defense ...we can win. Well, we have  a nice option, with a limited spread component now. This is the best offense in my years as a fan. We do lack a power component though. Our defense has the opportunity to do well against some spread teams (ie: Michigan state) ...but we lack the ability to compete in our conference because we do not have the same power offenses that (all but one of) the Gateway/MVFC run. Thus we cannot simulate the speed and power for them. We need a power component to win close games. We need to be able to tell the opposing defense we are running the ball off tackle left ...and dare them to stop us. Not to the point of coach Tressel, that did this all the time, but certainly anywhere we need it. That is Penguin Swagger, and will really help our defense. There is no question Montgomery has the skills.
