New Design, I need opinions

I am working on the new look for the site, which will be out in summer:

I am sort of settled on this look:

each page will have a banner for the given sport.


Here is the other that I am considering:

Of course it is not done, it will have the complete menu on the left side. Again each sport will have it's own photos.

the second look is 2D, where the first is 3D.
the second one does have the ability to place an image on the top, which could apply to a story.
the second one will load a bit slower ...not much.

What do you guys (and gals) like or dislike?

I think either one would be just fine. Is one easier to work with for you? If so that would be a factor. If all else is equal, a faster load time is hard to argue with.
