Illinois State
« on: October 28, 2024, 07:57:19 PM »
This will be a season defining game for this team. If we play some D we are looking at a possible 6-6 season. Something that seemed improbable after the Duquesne loss and the blowout losses at Pitt and SDSU. RUNgard (no it isn’t spelled wrong) has single handedly taken over the offense. Although I liked what I saw Saturday, we still need a deep threat. Davidson to Oliver opened up the run game for King to get over a 1000 yards. The drop back and then scramble will only last so long against a defense that prepares for it. I did see UND spy RUNgard several times but he still managed to outrun the spy. We will need to score 45 the next 3 games if the defense does not step up!!

I agree with Pete.   We really need to be more balanced offensively especially taking a few more shots.  The back shoulder throw worked so well last year. Haven't seen many this year.  On d if we play like we did in the 2nd half last week we should be ok.   Would love to get a turnover and not give any up.

We are on the road next two. Big difference in us playing at home as opposed to a road game...We are horrible on the road.  All wins have been at home and blowout losses were  on the road.  Let's see how the defense shows up. If they do we got a shot but if not we will lose both away games.  Reality.

YSU 31-21. What concerns me is their QB can run.  Let's see how we improved against a running QB.

The happiness that we feel after the victory on Saturday obscures the fact that this is the worst defense in the history of Youngstown State University. Can we outscore Illinois State? Well we did outscore North Dakota. But doing that each week, especially on the road in the MVFC, seems unrealistic.

It says a lot about Illinois State's defense then as they are ranked 109 in the FCS in total defense. YSU is at 94th.

This is a very tight series, so another tight game between these two teams would not surprise me at all. Last two games in the series, both YSU wins, were won by the Penguins in the final 10 seconds.

Could not agree more with these comments.  Don't want to throw a wet-blanket on an OT win against a Top 10 team, but the reality is that we made one more play than they did.  Happy we did - and hopefully the entire YSU Team gets some confidence from it, but I can't see us winning more than one additional game the rest of the season.  And would not be surprised if we did not win any.

Offensively they need to convert 3rd downs.  Would love to see a shot up top here.

Isu were putting too many guys in the box and playing the receivers tight. Need to throw a few longer passes down field to loosen up the defense.

I agree with double.  Crazy game.  It sure did look like that should have been a fumble and not a TD.  Must have just figured not enough evidence to overturn.

I thought he fumbled the fall prior to crossing the goal line. It should either be a safety or put the ball at the 1. But, it should not be a tad.
