So if we are doing so well why do so many football players transfer out?   Cannot be making more somewhere else right?

I couldn't agree more PRIDE!  The article is misleading to say the least.  They referenced the MBB being #12 in NIL.  Could they be more specific with details?

We are  not 12th in NIL.  I looked it up.  We are near the bottom for athletic budget for all sports for D1.  I don’t know what that writer was referencing.

It reads like he’s trying to say 12 in the league, but if I’m not mistaken, we do not have 12 teams at this point in the league

The author made two very clear points: we lead the Horizon League in NIL and we are 13th in all of DI in NIL. Perhaps his information is inaccurate, but that is the meaning that he was trying to convey.

I believe the first assertion. Keep in mind that the Horizon League largely consists of schools located in big cities. In those places, the sporting public follows the professional teams or perhaps a nearby DI power. Only alumni care about their Horizon League sports programs. Conversely our business community loves to support YSU athletics (and the tax breaks that come with their donations.) I expect that we will always lead the Horizon League in NIL.

The statement that we are 13th nationally in NIL is so odd that it can probably be dismissed. Do keep in mind however that NIL has nothing to do with our athletic budget. It is private payments and sponsorship opportunities that go directly to our athletes.

I continue to belive that most of out transfers out went with our blessing. We lost a bunch of defensive players from a bad defense. I can only think of one los I wish had stayed.

Is this fact or just an opinion.  I hope you are right but I find it hard to think that the coaching staff felt that it was good that last seasons starters on defense were better off transferring and that they could replace  them with better players from the transfer portal.   I'd be curious which guys are an up grade on the Dline or linebackers.   Especially since the guys that transferred went to actual D1 programs like Kansas,Illinois and Duke.

Athletic budget numbers are irrelevant to NIL, NIL money comes from outside sources

I just came across the mid-August edition of the local Business Journal. It has a long article on the Penguin Collective and NIL money to YSU.   Here are the highlights:

Many local companies have signed on. National companies are close to being included.
Repeats claim that we are 13th in all of DI basketball.
500K expected to be raised in 2024.
Here is the breakdown by sports:

325K men's BB
190K football
    9K women's BB
    5K softball

Men's and women's combined payout average to athletes is 24.6K.
Horizon League average is 1.1K

120 YSU athletes have NIL deals.

Average payout for YSU athletes is 7.1K
Average payout for all FCS is 3.5K
Average payout for MVFC is 3.1K
Average payout for MAC is 2.3K

Assuming this is all true, the impact of NIL at YSU is very real.

I don’t understand how we are 13 in all of College Basketball in NIL?
So let’s see Duke Kentucky  USC  Ohio St Alabama  Texas Texas A&M West Virginia Kansas  Arizona  UCLA LSU Miami.  We are claiming we are 13th in all of Basketball makes no sense we are on par with the big boys!  Yea right.  Why would our coach leave?

Not sure if this says much and the first link seems to conflate rankings of recruits more than NIL mony but it gives some idea how much money the big boys are paying out.   Hard to believe YSU can raise money to compete with these monsters.  I'm sure Wick is reporting what he read so  no swipe at him.

This is the article that Wick mentioned.

You would think more would be spent on football instead of men's basketball but that is the way the University is heading.   Basketball is on the rise and football has been declining with attendance so go with the hot hand I guess.

I would have had Wodke and Howard back even though Dylan's production dropped way off in 2023. We lost a bunch of DBs that couldn't cover me. When somebody says "I continue to believe"  a reasonable person would assume its an opinion. Your "fact" question is ignored and unappreciated.
