YSU at CSU
« on: February 17, 2024, 12:51:39 PM »
Going to be a good game.  They have lost 2 at home most recently so I really don't know what to expect.   One thing is we need to shoot well and continue to rebound well.  Plus some sort of defense. Game time is 3pm.

Disappointing loss which highlights the fact that this team can’t seem to hold a lead and put away the opponent.

Damn sure didn't want that game today!  Take a lead and throw it away with turnover after turnover!

18 turnovers.   When you're on the road you need to protect every possession .   Not sure why Rush is in a funk but the team needs him to add something to the offense that we were used to seeing.

We have a good collection of talented college basketball players. But we do not have a good college basketball team. I have run out of words trying to describe this group of talented individuals who simply refuse to play hard for 40 minutes.

Gave the game away with poor 3 point shooting and too many turnovers.   Tristan E. had 31 points and both were on Calhouns radar that we had to control.   Unless we lead by double digits we fall in league play.  Need Milwaukee to beat NKU tonight.  We are not going to win league but can sure up a top 4 spot if we go 2-2 next 4 games.  GB away on Sunday again with less than 48 hours prep is not good.  Need to beat Milwaukee on Friday.   One game at a time

This team played without more structured offensive plays. We rarely set up plays to get our shooters open especially against better defensive teams. Too many one on one and forced outside 3 point shots in last few games.
We rushed up court towards the end of the game ending in turn overs or missed shots. Why did we ask Burns to bring the ball up court?

When we could not make the 3 points shots or high % free throws, we lost. High turnovers didn’t help. How many times today did we lose the ball while dribbling into the crowded paint?

When Rush can hit the tree balls, we could overcome these issues. If he couldn’t make the 3 balls, defense collapsed into the paint making our inside game difficult.

We lost the game at csu today because we had all those issues.

I watched the entire game on ESPN+, I thought csu players wanted this game more than us.

It was kind of interesting that, many times, our assistant coaches were on the sidelines instructing the players during the timeouts while Calhoun was sitting on the bench (looking unhappy). Anybody else observed that or was that just me?

Calhoun is a good coach.   He got us here and Slocum couldn't.   Fact

Just watched the replay of this game...UGLY pretty much describes it.  A lot went wrong in this game:

*CSU wanted it more.  Even though YSU outrebounded them, CSU seemed to get all the loose balls and 50-50 balls

*Turnovers were maddening.  18 of them and they converted them into 27 points compared to just 7 for YSU off CSU's turnovers.

*In pretty much all of YSU's league losses they've had sizable leads and collapsed down the stretch.  Even though YSU has a lot of guys that can score, it's just like no one can step up and stop the bleeding when they need it the most.

*It's hard to figure out what's happened to Rush.  He just doesn't seem mentally into the games.  He doesn't have the speed he once had.  His shots were way off tonight.  0-5 from 3 and most weren't even close.

*The conference title is basically out of reach at this point.  Now just need to hold on to a top 4 spot.  Hopefully can split the Wisconsin swing and then beat Detroit.

And I agree with the comment about Coach Calhoun.  He didn't seem into the game tonight. Why is it he rarely does post game interview on the radio when they lose?

Coach said it all.  We have to win 2 of next 3 though for a shot at a top 4 spot and host a 1st round game in the conference tournament.   Lets hope we play with much more fire this coming Friday.   Long time ro dwell on what we did rt or wrong and correct it.   Milwaukee just beat NKU last night as well creating a log jam in the middle of the standings.  Go Guins!!!
