Eric Wolford? Why was he let go?
« on: October 31, 2021, 12:18:42 PM »
I went back and looked at Eric’s record here.

8-4 5–3 conference tied for 2nd
7-5 4-4.  Last year.
Other then year 1 we were 500 in the conference
He was relatively young when he started.  Had a win in 11 at NDSt.  Best Pitt.

He was upgrading recruiting.  We all knew we had crappy D assistant coaches.  We are b****ing about the same thing now.
A Penguin for life!!!

No defense at the end of the games. He was a good recruiter and good on offense. At the time we had higher expectations. In hindsight he would have been better than BP.

He also had an atrocious record in November, his teams would look like playoff contenders but then drop the last 3/4 and miss them completely. The momentum of the season always felt like it ended on a disappointing note

Both 2013 and 2014 teams lost 3 straight games to finish their seasons which was super depressing. It made me feel like he was underperforming

Always felt like his teams looked great against cupcakes when they had 100% health but couldn’t grind out ugly wins when they really needed them

His teams couldn't close games out. Just some god awful defense.

The Wolf.

In his very first game as YSU HC, we were beating Penn St at the end of the first quarter. In his second season he gave eventual national champs NDSU their only loss. The next year (2012) he just doesn't beat a P5 team...but humiliates them in their house. The next season, he improves to 8-4/5-3. In his final season, in addition to a winning record, he was beating a P5 BIG team in Q4 (the butt punt changed the dynamic of that game). No scandals, no convicted gang rapists...just Youngstown-style football that made you look forward to Saturdays.

Here's the Wolf record:

2010 Youngstown State 3–8 1–7 9th
2011 Youngstown State 6–5 4–4 T–4th
2012 Youngstown State 7–4 4–4 T–6th
2013 Youngstown State 8–4 5–3 T–2nd
2014 Youngstown State 7–5 4–4 T–5th

One losing conference record...his first season.

About finishing strong, one year his final three games were SDSU (advanced to second round of playoffs), NDSU (eventual champs), and UNI. How many teams that entered the playoffs that year that would've also gone 0-3...prolly most of them. Today we'd kill for a season like that.

And oh yeah....he beat UNI...something his incompetent and lethargic predecessor couldn’t do in 9 tries...

Wolford's teams were actually IN games.  He had a legit FCS QB.   However if #8 wasn't in the secondary he probably has 3-4 more wins and a playoff appearance.

1. Wolf signed his own resignation the day he let 1/4 of the team leave, right after he was hired, as most were starters. Those were very good recruits from Heacock. We recruited no one on defense during Wolfford's whole tenure and the offense had solid recruiting after they brought in Montgomery...who installed an offense and recruited to match it. Wolf was then was let go because he needed to be let go, but also because we had another Tressel pick in mind ... coach Bo.

We need to stop grabbing at straws. This is a Tressel selection; no thing else to say.
