YSU 75-73 over Oakland

IMO the biggest win of the season.  Partly because it was Coach Calhoun's press that was key.  Guy has a system, and we all knew it would take a while, but it is catching on.  Somebody on the blog said after the first month we probably won't win another D-1 game all season.  Oh ye of little faith!

Covington's Putback at the Buzzer Gives Penguins 75-73 Win over Oakland

Garrett Covington had a catch-and-shoot putback at the buzzer to send the Youngstown State men's basketball team to a 75-73 win over Oakland at Beeghly Center on Wednesday night.

Covington caught Braun Hartfield's miss and got his winning shot off with 0.1 seconds left to give the Penguins their second straight Horizon League victory. YSU scored the final nine points of the game after trailing 73-66 with 2:30 remaining, and seven of those points came from Covington.

Covington finished with 18 points, and Cameron Morse scored a game-high 23 points for Youngstown State.  Jalen Hayes led four Golden Grizzlies in double figures with 19 points.

Youngstown State (8-20 overall, 6-9 Horizon League) had 13 steals and forced Oakland into 18 turnovers, and the Penguins converted those turnovers into 25 points. YSU also had seven blocks, including a big one by Covington at the end of the shot clock on Oakland's final possession.

I was at the game, The small crowd was pretty noisy especially during the last 40 secs of the game.
The team played extremely in the last several minutes over coming the deficits.
With the game tied, Oakland ran the clock down and had the open shot just inside the 3 point arc with around 8 seconds to go. He passed up the shot and passed it to Nunn in the corner who took a 3 point shot. Covington blocked Nunn's shot  and YSU called timeout and set up the last play.
During the game, on a YSU missed shot, Tyree took off from the foul line grabbed and dunk the ball back in with tremendous power. I thought that was the highlight of the game....

Their defense is getting better and they start to play team defense.

Biggest problem with this team is still the Francisco injury.  Freshman are getting closer to being Sophomores and so they are beginning to make progress.  This is going to be fun watching this program develop.  Anybody hear if Santiago is going to get medical redshirt year?

ytownchief22:
6 conference wins in his first year. Calhoun is the real deal... Won't know anything on Santiago's possible extra year until the summer time.

Oh, then we should find out in a couple days based on today's weather!  (much as I'd like, I bet we have some winter left!)
Any idea on a spring game?  After cancelling last year due to terrible weather, I haven't seen anything even scheduled this year.
