Golf teams finish 1st and 2nd as Dixon Continues to Impress

Batavia, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's golf team used a strong final two rounds to place second at the 11-team NKU Fall Collegiate Classic which concluded on Monday. YSU's D.J. Holub and Brandon Pluchinsky finished in the top seven.

The Penguins finished with a three-round total of 865 following rounds of 295, 281 and 289. Winning the event by six strokes with an 859 was Morehead State. YSU was in third place behind Wright State after the second round but carded five fewer strokes on Raiders during Tuesday's final round.

Holub finished fifth to lead the Penguins with a three-round total of an even-par 213. Holub had rounds of 73, 68 and 72 at the event. Pluchinsky had a two-over par total of 215 and finished in seventh place. He carded scores of 73, 70 and 72.

Steven Sveda finished 13th with a 218 (76-71-71), Bill Gaffney was 25th with a 223 (73-72-78), Jason McQuown finished 32nd with a 225 (79-72-74) and Evan Standohar placed 48th with a 231 (73-79-79).

The Penguins return to action on Oct. 5-6 when they compete at the Cleveland State Invitational at the Barrington Country Club in Aurora, Ohio.

Rochester, Mich. - The Youngstown State women's golf team finished second at the nine-team OU Golden Grizzlies Invitational which concluded on Tuesday at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course. Senior Emily Dixon won her third event of the fall with a two-round total of 144.

Dixon was steady throughout the tournament firing even par 72's on Monday and on Tuesday. She was one shot behind Oakland's Morgan Smith after the first round before winning by an impressive six shots. Dixon's 72 was the lowest by two strokes on Tuesday.

Dixon took first at the YSU Kickoff on August 31 and placed first in a recent dual match against Niagara.

The Penguins carded a team total of 623 (310-313) and were nine shots back of Oakland which won the team championship with a 614.

A pair of YSU freshman had top-10 finishes. Finishing in fifth place was Christina Cooper with a 157 (78-79) while Gabby Minor was tied for seventh with a 158 (77-81).

Another freshman, Megan Creager was 11th with a 160 (79-81), while Courtney Shutt placed 18th with a 164 (83-81) and Emily Rohanna was 26th carding a 170 (85-85).

YSU returns to action on Oct. 4-5 when it plays host to the Roseann Schwartz Invitational at the Avalon Lakes Golf Course in Warren.
