Youngstown State redshirt junior forward Heidi Schlegel has been named the Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
Schlegel, a native of Wapakoneta, Ohio, averaged 17.6 points and 7.0 rebounds during the month while boasting a 3.74 grade-point average in middle childhood education. Schlegel earned a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester, and the YSU women's basketball team posted a 3.46 as a team.
In YSU's seven December games, Schlegel had three 20-plus point performances with 27 points at Akron, 25 points against Malone and 24 points versus Cincinnati. During this stretch, Schlegel scored 123 points, grabbed 49 rebounds, dished out 13 assists and collected five steals.
Detroit basketball player Evan Bruinsma was named the Male Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Both Schlegel and he are nominees for the 2014 AllState Good Works Team.
