Men's Basketball to host Detroit Saturday January 18
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:38:11 PM »
YSU (11-8, 2-2) will host Detroit Saturday night.

Detroit is 8-10, 1-2 in the Horizon heading in to a home game tonight against Valpo.  The Titans are 2-6 on the road this year

Detroit has one "good" win ( top 150 Pomeroy) - over 137 Rhode Island.  The Titans have two "bad" losses (to sub Pomeroy 200 teams) at South Alabama and at Bowling Green.

YSU has two "good" wins - 81 Cleveland State and 142 Eastern Kentucky and of course the two "bad" losses to 281 Austin Peay and at 212 UMKC.  Pomeroy has YSU ranked 141.

Pomeroy gives YSU a 73% chance of winning with a 79-72 projection.

Massey gives YSU a 69% chance of winning, projecting 80-75.

Sagarin's ratings make YSU a 7 point favorite at home.

I like YSU's chances.  UDM has one less day to prepare, and will have to travel.  UDM lost to CSU by 10 points (although defeated Bethune-Cookman by a wider margin than YSU).  UDM got absolutely owned by U Conn 101-55.   UDM is an average defensive team in the HL facing the most productive offense in the HL and the highest scoring player in the HL.

74-69 YSU

YSU outperforms the rating systems tonight with a 77-63 win

Nice job taking care of business.  DJ Cole stepped up with some great shooting tonight.

Poor play early. Pulled away slowly the 2nd half. Detroit isn't very good and YSU needs to get better.

A good win and it shows that we can play to win when KP has an off night.  Still worried about next year without him but this performance gives us hope.   One thing that concerns me is the lack of points/rebs from our bench.  Why is Plummer, Steward, and the bench not playing much?   Seem like Amiker gets the minutes and not much by anyone else.   These guys need to play more not only for game experience but without them our team will be too tired come February.  We all know how Slocum's team's perform in February.

Are the Horizon League referees getting worse each game or is it me?  They seem to miss tons of traveling calls and always the referees far from the play call the foul as opposed to the referee closer to the play.  They were awful yesterday.

Need a packed house the next two home games.  Good opponents so come out and support YSU Mahoning Valley.

Go Guins!
