Long Three-Peats, Heath named Hitter of the Week
« on: April 01, 2013, 12:35:14 PM »
INDIANAPOLIS -- Milwaukee senior Jake Long has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the third week in a row while Youngstown State junior Marcus Heath earned Hitter of the Week honors for the first time this season.

Long tossed a complete-game shutout against Valparaiso in his only outing last week. It was the right-hander's third-straight complete game and second shutout in a row, running his scoreless innings streak to 26.0, the longest active streak in the nation.

In his gem against the Crusaders, Long allowed eight hits (one double) and two walks, recording five strikeouts.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday at Northern Illinois before facing Youngstown State in a conference series this weekend.

The Penguins took two out of three games from in-state rival Wright State over the weekend, led by Heath's .333 batting average and impressive 1.111 slugging percentage. While he was just 3-for-9 in the series, all three of the first baseman's hits went for extra bases: two home runs and a double.

Heath also walked three times in the series and was hit twice by pitches. The junior scored four runs in the series and drove in five runs.

Youngstown State travels to Ohio State on Thursday and will host Akron on Wednesday and Milwaukee this weekend.

Other Horizon League Top Performers (Mar. 25-31)

Mitch Ghelfi, Milwaukee (Fr., C) - Batted an impressive .727 (8-for-11) on the week with two doubles, three runs and two RBI. Also threw out a pair of would-be base stealers while playing errorless defense.
Mike Schnider, Milwaukee (Jr., LHP) - Tossed 7.2 shutout innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts. Now leads the Horizon League with four wins and is tied for the lead in strikeouts.
Keiston Greene, Wright State (Jr., OF) - Went 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate with two doubles, a home run and a stolen base, scoring a pair of runs and driving in three.
Ryan Shober, UIC (Sr., OF) - The recently-converted former infielder batted .421 (9-for-21) with two doubles and the first home run of his collegiate career. Drove in three runs and scored four times, stealing two bases along the way.
