Men's Basketball vs. Loyola Thursday 7 p.m.
« on: January 03, 2012, 09:53:06 PM »
The men host Loyola Thursday at 7 p.m.

I mentioned in the CSU thread that the two games with Loyola and UIC this week are very important.  By every ranking I have seen, these are the two lowest ranked teams in the Horizon League.  You have to take care of business at hme. If YSU loses either of these games, it is like giving away the CSU win.  Focus has been a problem over the years for YSU - lets hope they play hard and with a chip on their shoulder and don't act like they just have to show up to win.

Loyola enter 0-4 in the league, 5-9 overall.  There have been only four Horizon League games decided by 10 or more points this year - Loyola has lost all four.  The Ramblers are 2-6 on the road, but one of those wins should get YSU's attention.  Loyola won at Toledo 57-55, YSU lost at Toledo 86-77.

Pomeroy gives YSU a 79% chance of winning (second only to an 80% chance of winning at home against UIC on Saturday) predicting a 66-58 YSU win.  Statistically YSU's advantage seems to be in turnover percentage.  YSU is 19th best, Loyola is 321st of 344 points.  A seemingly obvious fact in all games, but YSU needs to take care of the ball and force turnovers.

Sagarin's overall rankings make YSU a 9 point favorite, his predictor rankings also have YSU favored by 9.

Recapping - Pomery YSU by 8, Sagarin by 9.  Will be interesting to see what the line on the game is.

A win is what is most important - hopefully getting some bench production to help limit the starters minutes.  Blake Allen has playing 88% of the minutes this year, Kendrick Perry 86%.  Fewer minutes should help on Saturday.

The Youngstown State men's basketball team (7-6, 2-1 Horizon League) searches for the program's 1000th win when it hosts Loyola(5-9, 0-4 Horizon League), Thursday Jan. 5, at 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center. The game can be heard on 570 WKBN-AM.

The Loyola Series
This is the 26th meeting between Youngstown State and Loyola in a series that dates back to 1956. Loyola leads the all-time series, 14-11, and has won the three contests. Last season, Loyola swept the season series, including an 83-53 victory at the Beeghly Center. The last time YSU defeated Loyola was a 71-67 win on Jan. 9, 2010, at the Beeghly Center.

About Loyola
Loyola is currently 5-9 overall and 0-4 in the Horizon League. The Ramblers are coming off losses to Wright State, 64-49 (12/29), and Detroit, 65-54 (12/31). Ben Averkamp leads the Ramblers with 15 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and Walt Gibler is averaging 13.5 points per game.

A Win Will
• Improve YSU 8-6 on the year and 3-1 in the Horizon League.
• Surpass YSU's Horizon League win total from last season.
• Mark the first time the Guins start conference play 3-1 since joining the Horizon League.
• Marks the first time since 2000-01 YSU begings conference play with a 3-1 mark.
• Mark YSU's fourth home win of the season.
• Mark the program's 12th win over Loyola.
• Mark the first win over Loyola since 2010.
• Mark Head Coach Jerry Slocum's 646th career victory and his 66th at Youngstown State.
• Mark YSU's 1,000th victory in the program's history.

Nearing 1,000 Wins
The Guins are approaching a significant milestone in the program's history. YSU has won 999 games and needs just one more to collect the program's 1,000th win.

Eargle Named HL Player of the Week
Junior forward Damian Eargle was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on Jan. 2. Eargle posted his second double-double with a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds and led the Penguins to a 73-67 win over Cleveland State on Dec. 31. Eargle scored 14 of his points in the second half. He went 8-of-11 from the field. It marks the first time in his YSU career Eargle has won the league accolade.

Eargle Single-Season Blocks Rank 4th
Junior Damian Eargle has 53 blocks in 13 games this season. His total already ranks fourth on the YSU single-season blocks chart. His 91 last season rank second on the list.

Allen Streakin From 3
Junior Blake Allen has made at least one 3-pointer in all 13 games this season and has made at least one in 20 straight contests dating back to last year. He has also made at least three 3-pointers in eight of the 13 games this year. Allen also leads the Horizon League with 3.2 3-pointers made per game. Allen has also made 81 3-pointers in the last 30 games.

Last Time Out
Damian Eargle recorded his second double-double of the season and senior Ashen Ward scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half as the Guins toppled Cleveland State, 73-67, on Dec. 31, in Cleveland, Ohio. Senior DuShawn Brooks also netted 17 points for the Guins.

Up Next
The Guins welcome UIC to the Beeghly Center, Saturday, Jan. 7, at 7:05 p.m.

Eargle Moves Into Second
Junior Damian Eargle has moved into second place on the YSU career blocks chart in just 43 games played. Eargle has 144 blocked shots. The only player ahead of Eargle is Ricky Tunstall, who recorded 221 career blocks. Counting his 57 blocks at UNC-Greensboro, Eargle has reached 201 blocked shots for his entire college career.

Guins Setting Record Pace
The Guins have made 125 3-pointers in 13 games this season for an average of 9.6 3-pointers made per game. They are on pace to shatter the school's single-season mark of 235 set last year. If YSU continues this pace over the next 17 guaranteed games, they will finish the season with 288 3-pointers made.

Brooks Tearin' Up Horizon League
Just three games into the Horizon League slate, senior DuShawn Brooks is having his way with his opponents. Brooks is averaging 19.3 points and five rebounds per game. The 6-foot-7 forward is shooting 61.8 percent (21-for-34) from the field and 63.2 percent (12-for-19) from 3-point range.

Ward Highlights For Hometown
Senior Ashen Ward stepped up big for the Guins playing in front of his hometown crowd in Cleveland, Ohio, on Dec. 31. Ward scored 15 points, including 12 in the second half, to help YSU to a 73-67 win over Cleveland State. Ward connected on 4-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. In the three games prior, Ward was just 1-for-16 from the floor and 0-for-8 from behind the arc.

Allen Nearing 100 3's
In just 43 career games, junior Blake Allen is nearing the century mark for 3-pointers made. Allen has 89 3-pointers during his time at YSU. The fastest to reach 100 made 3-pointers in a career was Elmer Brown, who made his 100th triple in his 45th game.

Perry Nearing 500 Points
Sophomore Kendrick Perry could become the 33rd player in school history to score 1,000 career points. In just 43 career games, Perry has scored 465 points and needs just 35 more to reach the mid-way point of the coveted plateau. For his career, he is averaging 10.8 points per game, including a 15.1 points per game scoring average this year.

Brooks Increasing Offensive Production
Senior DuShawn Brooks has increased dramatically his offensive from last season to this year. Brooks has scored in double figures in six of the last eight games, including two 20-point performance. Over that span, Brooks averaged 14.3 points per game and shot 52.6 percent (41-of-78) from the field and 53.2 percent (25-of-47) from 3-point range. Last year, Brooks reached double digits just six times, scored at least 20 points just once and made a total of 21 3-pointers.

Ward Now Ranks 9th
With 18 3-pointers this season, senior Ashen Ward now ranks ninth all-time with 115 career 3-pointers. He needs two more to move into eighth place on the list.

Allen, Brooks Have Chance For Record
Junior Blake Allen and senior DuShawn Brooks are challenging to set the YSU single-season 3-point field-goal percentage record. Brooks is shooting 47.3 percent from 3-point range and Allen is shooting at a 43.8 clip from behind the arc. The single-season mark was set by Andre Smith (45.9 percent) during the 1993-94 season.

Guins Celebrate 40 Years in Beeghly
The 2011-12 campaign is the 40th season the Beeghly Center has been the home of Youngstown State men's basketball. YSU first took to the court in the Beeghly Center in 1972-73. YSU has a record of 316-234 in games played in the Beeghly Center.

KP Notches Second Double-Double
Sophomore Kendrick Perry recorded his second career double-double with 18 points and 10 assists against Buffalo on Dec. 10. His first career double-double came against Wilberforce on Jan. 11, 2011,when he scored 13 points with 10 rebounds.

The 87 Percent
The Guins' offense has basically come from its five starters this season. Kendrick Perry, Blake Allen, Damian Eargle, Ashen Ward and DuShawn Brooks combine of an average of 58.3 points per game. As a team, the Guins are averaging 67.3 points per game, which translates into the starters scoring 87 percent of the team's points.

Brooks Named Player of the Week
Senior DuShawn Brooks was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for Dec. 5. Brooks averaged 20.5 points per game and shot 61.5 percent from the field and 64.3 percent from 3-point range. He scored a career-high 24 points against Detroit on Dec. 1 to lead the Guins to a 64-61 win. He also led the team with 17 points in a one-point loss to Wright State on Dec. 3. The last YSU player to earn the award was DeAndre Mays on Jan. 11, 2010.

Last With 10 Assists
With 10 assists against Buffalo on Dec. 10, sophomore Kendrick Perry became the first player to accomplish the feat since DeAndre May did so against Valparaiso on Feb. 13, 2010.

Guins Set 3's Mark Again
For the third time this season, the Guins tied the school single-game record with 14 3-pointers made in a game against Buffalo on Dec. 10. The Guins tied the school single-game mark with 14 3-pointers game against Penn State on Nov. 23. and Notre Dame College on Nov. 15. The previous time YSU made 14 3 pointers in a game was against Butler on Jan. 9, 2011. Against the Bulls, the Guins also tied the school single-game mark for most 3-point field goals attempted with 35.

Brooks Had Career Day at Detroit
Senior DuShawn Brooks turned in a career-best performance with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range.

Eargle Third Nationally
Junior Damian Eargle continues to be a one of the top shot blockers in the country. Eargle currently ranks third nationally with 4.1 blocks per game. Last season, he finished the year ranked 10th in the country with 3.0 blocks per game.

Guins in National Stats
In the latest NCAA stats released on Jan. 1, YSU can be found throughout several categories. The Guins rank fifth nationally wiht 9.6 3-pointers made per game, 20th with 6.8 blocks per game and 33rd with a .388 3-point field-goal percentage. Individually, besides Damian Eargle, Blake Allen is ninth with a with 3.2 3-pointers made per game 36th with a .438 3-point percentage.

Allen, Perry Score 20
Junior Blake Allen and sophomore Kendrick Perry became the first duo to score at least 20 points in game since Vytas Sulskis (25) and Damian Eargle (24) accomplished the feat against Malone on Dec. 13, 2010. Allen scored 25 and Perry posted 23 against Penn State on Nov. 23.

Eargle Has Chance For 1,000
In under three seasons of playing college basketball, junior Damian Eargle has scored more than 700 points with 744. Eargle needs just 256 more points to reach 1,000 for his entire career, which includes 268 points during the 2008-09 season at UNC-Greensboro. Last season, Eargle ranked second on the squad with 339 points for an average of 11.3 points per game.

Perry Nets Career Scoring High
Sophomore Kendrick Perry scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to lead the Guins to a 76-69 win over Samford on Nov. 12. Perry's 28 points are the most points scored by a sophomore since Doug Underwood scored 28 against Green Bay on Jan. 29, 2003. He also made four 3-pointers with four assists and four steals.

Last to Score 30
With 30 points against Loyola on Jan. 9, 2010, DeAndre Mays set a career-high and became the first player to score at least 30 points since Keston Roberts scored 31 against Detroit on Feb. 27, 2007. Mays' performance was the 10th time under Jerry Slocum a player has scored at least 30 points in a game. YSU had just 10 30-point plus performances from Feb. 1988 to Dec. 2005.

Talk about ugly wins.  YSU wins 68-64 in overtime.

Seems like the Guins were the recipients of some friendly whistles down the stretch.  I would probably be ranting and raving if the tables were turned.

Ward and Eargle with big defensive plays down the stretch.  Eargle had 5 blocks.

The bad:

Starters played 200 of the 225 minutes in the game.  Makes winning more important.  Will be interesting to see how YSU plays down the stretch Saturday night.

Free throw shooting at 43.5% worse than field goal shooting 46.4%.  Don't win very often making 10 of 23 free throws.

We know there are no easy games in this league for YSU.  Glad to get the win and move on to have a chance to go 4-1 in the league against UIC on Saturday night.  Will post the Sagarin and Pomeroy info on Saturday's game after tomorrow's updates

Not sure how many but several of those missed ft's were the front end of 1and1. Game should not have been close but at least we won. 24 fouling out did not hurt.

Ugly, but I'll take it.  It's nice to be on the winning side.  The Bobby Morris loss still hurts!  Go 4-1, Please!

We take them any way that we can get them.  But this game really was a preview of the trouble that we shall face as the league season progresses.  Loyola had two good inside players.  Brooks really struggled on defense tonight, but he is actually a small forward forced by circumstances to play the 4 spot.  The more the big guys on our bench see action, the worse they look.  If we just had two DI players to bring off our bench, this would be a good team.  I know that you out-of-towners are getting sick of complaints about our depth, but it looks worse in person than it does on tv.  Again, 3-1 in the league for the first time.  Let's enjoy it.

Trib game story

http://www.tribtoday.com/page/content.detail/id/566236/YSU-s-milestone-victory.html?nav=5024

YOUNGSTOWN - The Youngstown State University Penguins defeated Loyola University Chicago Thursday night at the Beeghly Center, 68-64, in overtime.

"We went into the timeout saying they gave us five extra minutes to prove that we were supposed to win this game in the first place, and we came out and executed on defense," senior Ashen Ward said. "I feel like when you play hard and you do it every day, then it's going to show in the game."

The Penguins (8-6, 3-1) shot 46.4 percent from the field, 31.6 from 3-point territory and only 43.5 at the free throw line. The Ramblers (5-10, 0-5) shot 44.6 percent overall, 35.3 beyond the 3-point line and 66.7 at the foul line.

The Penguins, however, committed only three turnovers and scored 14 points off the Ramblers' nine turnovers. YSU coach Jerry Slocum said taking care of the basketball is the team's strength.

"Our goal tonight was to keep them to under 10 offensive rebounds," Slocum said. "We got a really tough game on Saturday, but I'm happy for our kids. They played hard tonight. It wasn't an effort issue."

The Ramblers collected 11 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Penguins 35-31. The Ramblers also compiled eight more assists (20-12).

Slocum said wasn't the prettiest game, but his kids battled hard throughout.

"I told our kids going into the overtime 'listen. This is Horizon League basketball. It's physical, it's not pretty, it's clutchy,'" Slocum said. "I thought our kids did a great job. I thought they overcame missed shots."

Slocum added that the Penguins overcame a few of the 13 missed free throws.

"When you have good years, you overcome these types of situations," Slocum said. "It wasn't for a lack of effort. We just didn't shoot the ball well and didn't make our foul shots."

Ward said Slocum will have the Penguins shooting a lot in practice on Friday.

"It's really just about routine," Ward said. "I mean we missed a few (free throws), but we made a few down the stretch to give us the win. We just got to keep our confidence, keep our routine and hopefully Saturday we'll shoot better."

Ward led the Penguins with a season-high 21 points, and he added four rebounds and four assists to his game. He said he's used to these games.

"A lot of them on the opposite end, but this team is working," Ward said. "We're working really hard, we're battling despite everything and just playing hard."

Junior Damian Eargle, recently named Horizon League Player of the Week, finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Sophomore Kendrick Perry added 13 points and junior Blake Allen collected 11.

The Penguins got all but two points from their starters. The bench played 25 total minutes, 22 in the first half. Freshman Josh Chojnacki was the lone bench player with a field goal.

"They've been playing very well lately," Slocum said. "It was just kind of the flow of the game tonight. I think we did a good job of them getting in the first half, and then in the second half, I didn't squeeze the trigger. I didn't get those guys in, and I should have."

The Penguins had their hands full against senior Walt Gibler and junior Ben Averkamp.

Gibler finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds while Averkamp pitched in 23 points before fouling out midway in overtime. The rest of the team scored 15 points.

Slocum said Averkamp and Gibler got the best of the Penguins.

"It's disappointing to some regard to know who their best two players are and for them to dominate," Slocum said. "One dominated the first half; the other dominated the second half. But, on the other side of that, our last three minutes, I thought we got some great stops."

Ward said the two players were almost unstoppable but added that things got easier when Averkamp fouled out.

"When Averkamp and Gibler were in the game, it's tough to stop two bigs that they can give it to at any time, but when you know there's only one down there, you can give a lot of extra help," Ward said. "That's really what we did. We just tried to stop Gibler."

The Ramblers had a shot to win in regulation, but Averkamp and Gibler missed two jumpers after Perry hit a game-tying free throw. He missed the first free throw in that stretch.

The Penguins won their 1,000th game since the men's basketball program began in 1927. Ward said it was a big deal.

"I hope that I'll be mentioned somewhere down the line for that 1,000th win," he said.

Slocum said one couldn't mention 1,000 wins without naming former head coach Dom Rosselli.

"On the night that you get your 1,000th, you cannot not remember him and what he did for basketball and what he did at YSU," Slocum said. "Obviously it's a historic night, but let's bring up coach Rosselli's name that night."

Slocum added that he is proud of YSU and what they mean to the valley.

Rosselli coached YSU from 1946-82, compiling 566 victories. Slocum has won 66 games at YSU since he began in 2005. The Penguins' overall record stands at 1,000-1,024.

The Penguins' next game is Saturday against the University of Illinois at Chicago (5-10, 1-4) at the Beeghly Center.

Ward said the team's confidence is high heading into the game.

"We believe that we were supposed to win these games," Ward said. "We're just looking forward to the next game against UIC on Saturday and hoping for the same result. They play hard, so it should be another grind-out game where hopefully our toughness is better than theirs."

Vindy game story

http://www.vindy.com/news/2012/jan/06/grand-victory/

After spending most of the night staring at his shoes whenever one of his players attempted a free throw, Youngstown State coach Jerry Slocum made sure to deliver a message to senior DuShawn Brooks in the closing seconds of Thursday’s game.

“Hey!” he shouted. “Make one of them!”

Brooks took the advice literally, missing the first before swishing the second with 12 seconds left to clinch a milestone 68-64 overtime victory over Loyola at Beeghly Center.

It was the 1,000th win in YSU history. It gave the Penguins (8-6, 3-1) their best start in Horizon League play since ... well, ever. And maybe most important, it proved they could win the type of close game they’ve lost so many times in the previous two seasons.

“This is my fourth year in the Horizon League and I’ve been through plenty of games like this,” said senior Ashen Ward, who scored a season-best 21 points. “A lot of them on the opposite end.

“We went into the [overtime] saying that they gave us five extra minutes to prove we were supposed to win this game in the first place.”

In a game that featured 15 lead changes, the Penguins’ defense stiffened in key moments, forcing two missed shots in the closing seconds of overtime (by each of Loyola’s two best players, no less) before holding the Ramblers to just two points over the final 2:55 of overtime.

“I thought that we battled,” said Slocum, whose team made just 10 of 23 at the line. “Obviously it wasn’t a pretty game but I told the kids going into overtime, ‘Hey, listen, Horizon League basketball is physical. It’s not pretty.’”

Damian Eargle added 14 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Penguins, who were coming off an emotional win over league-favorite Cleveland State on Saturday. Kendrick Perry added 13 and Blake Allen 11 as YSU got 66 of its 68 points from its five starters.

The game’s key play may have come midway through the overtime session when Loyola’s best player, junior Ben Avercamp, was hit with an offensive off-the-ball foul, his fifth.

With Avercamp out, YSU was able to send help on senior forward Walt Gibler, who was blocked twice by Eargle and was picked on a baseline steal by Ward, all in the closing minutes.

“It’s tough to stop two bigs,” Ward said. “To know that there’s only one down there, you can give a lot of extra help and that’s really what we did.”

Avercamp scored 23 points but the last two came on a jumper with 8:17 left. Gibler had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Ramblers (5-10, 0-5), who dropped to 0-7 when giving up 60 points or more.

“Defensively, we did a really good job over the last five or six possessions,” Slocum said. “I’m disappointed in some regard to know who their two best players are and for them to dominate. One dominated the first half, the other dominated the second half.

“But the other side of that is, our last three minutes I thought we got some great stops.”

YSU improved to 1,000-1,024 all-time, with the first win coming on Jan. 14, 1928 — a 36-16 victory at Clarion.

“I was alive when that first game came up,” joked Slocum. “I’m proud of YSU. I’m proud of what Youngstown is to the Valley.”

Slocum is 66-127 in his seven years at YSU, so he went out of his way to praise Dom Rosselli, who won 589 games from 1940-1982.

“On a night when you get your 1,000th, you cannot not remember him and what he did for basketball and what he did at YSU,” Slocum said.

We should have lost but luck was on our side.  Bench will haunt us the rest of the year.  Our fan support is pathetic for a team battling for 1st place.  We are averaging 1,400 fans a game which may be the worst it has ever been since moving to Div 1 30 years ago.

I have blasted the marketing department for years, but I will now back off.  I no longer blame them for the lack of crowds.  Last evening while driving home over the South Avenue bridge I noticed that there were as many cars in the Covelli Center lot as there were parked for our basketball game in our tailgate lot.  What was the Covelli attraction?  Hockey.  Junior hockey played by teenagers!  So our college basketball program is about as popular in this community as high school-aged hockey!  So how can you get people to support a product that they do not like or care about?  You can't.

I am hoping we avoided an upset after being a bit too confident following the CSU win. I hope the team now knows that CSU is really not the favorite anymore, and we have to play at 100% all the time. Boy, Slocum "pegged" Loyola earlier in the week. Real aggressive post play. I was most disappointed that we gave them a shot, and an offensive rebound, and another shot at the close of regulation  ...that is not lack of depth. I am very happy with what coach S has done with the team.

You can't.

I do not think that basketball is any different then football, this area has some hardcore fans that will be there no matter what. Not enough to fill either venue. Lots and lots of "fans" will come and fill the seats but only when they are pretty sure we will win. Bottom line - win and they will come.
