I thought the coach made a great call to go for 2 in overtime.  Our defense was toast as far as I could see in overtime. If we had kicked the extra point and went into another overtime, they would have scored easily and we would have had to score to keep up. And I think in the overtimes after the first, you need to go for 2. I just don't think we could keep up with them with our D done at that point in the game. So good call by the coach in my opinion.

As for Brungard, I think he finally showed me he could throw the ball down field effectively. Some of his throws showed an arm strength I had not seen previously. He needs to work on proper mechanics since he throws off his back foot much of the time. But with his Dad and Tomczak to help him over winter, hopefully he can get good throwing mechanics to help him throw down field with the needed accuracy and velocity and stretch defenses which was missing most of the year. Not sure if it is receivers, O line, play calling, etc., but opposing defenses sure stacked the box against us much of the time. Hopefully with this years’ experience he will be a more effective all around qb.

As for over the winter changes that need to be made, who knows for sure. Are our coaches good enough? Which of our current players stay or leave?  Which of our returning players are good enough or can grow into players that are good enough? Will the coach have the strength to pull support from some that do not measure up? Can we keep those on our roster that are good enough to play effectively at our level? How much NIL money can we gain and have to spend on our roster? Can we evaluate transfers that are needed and get them here?

This new world of college football is entirely different than the past. Using the methods of the past will not work. This off season will show if Coach Phillips is up to this new world of college football coaching at our level. I sure hope so since I feel he has many good qualities needed for our program at YSU

Our group was hoping for a two point try, so we were happy.  Nice finish for the recruits that were at the game. Almost impossible to know which coaches will be good working in the new world of college football, changes are too new. One thing that we do know is that we cannot have too much NIL money.

I agree, beating UNI regardless of how good or bad they are, is always a good thing, it was not the best of years, but there are always good things to be found if you are looking.

Great win. But before we get to high, it was the worst UNI team ever.  We were up 14-0 and we're first and 10 on their 25 before another implosion. Coaching staff is letting these kids down. D is embarrassingly bad and we nothing different play after play game after game. Gotta change and soon!

Though a win it was the worst UNI team we ever played and yet almost let them win.  So don't get your hopes up for next year.   We have to hit the portal hard and recruit size up front. Next year we play NDSU.

Our 4 wins this year - teams combined records are 14-29. We beat patsies and let’s face it the best win was against UND who are currently 5-6. One thing I think we are overlooking is that besides the Pitt and SDSU games, when we needed to score we didn’t and couldn’t. Villanova, Duquesne, Missouri State, South Dakota, Illinois State, SIU were all winnable games but we didn’t have the passing attack and balanced offense to win those games. Granted our defense was putrid all year but we were in those games but teams made adjustments against our one dimensional offense and we did not and could not score because we have no balance on offense and lacked the ability to stretch defenses. Priority in the portal - offense- Oline, 2 deep threat receivers, running back. Defense - front 7 and 2 secondary starters! Heard that the defensive schemes were too confusing this year?? We did lose a D coordinator who has Mercer winning their conference. Granted it’s not the MVFC but what happened?  I know.. we pay our assistant coaches beans and nobody would want to come here for little money. Heard it for 30 years. This off season is going to be crucial for this program. Otherwise we are looking at Pelini level breakdown.

To put things in perspective.  This season did not go as planned however it is definitely not all doom and gloom.  With a young QB that has shown consistent improvement all year and a young defense that has improved but needs to improve much more we will probably end the season 6 th or 7th in MVFC.  We will be 6 if ISU loses to UNI this week which is possible. I feel teams 1-5 would get in the playoffs however with Missouri State not eligible it will be 4 from MVFC.  Also as we look at the individual losses USD, ISU, MOST were all close winnable games and all of those teams are in playoff position right now.  This is with our d playing very poor especially early in the year.  Throw in the SUI and Duquesne games which we definitely should  have won and we would've talking playoffs. Btw, Duquesne will probably be a playoff team again.  They have not lost since they played us.  We truly are only 5 plays from being 9-3.  Just to add fuel to this logic I believe 2 of those games when MVFC reviewed refereeing they said the wrong call was made late in the game in favor of our opponent. Go guins

Jayguin way to go covering up and making excuses for a miserable year.   Defense needs revamped AGAIN and we are going to need to hit  portal hard with transfers that can actually play at this level.   Next years schedule includes NDSU on the road and SDSU at home.  Towson and Michigan St on road as well. Unless we get help we are looking at more of the same.  Just my thoughts.

I agree pride.  I feel like we said the same thing only with different spinsqq. I strongly feel out d needs to improve a lot to compete for a championship. Our d needs to improve a little for us to be a playoff team.  We need to compete Aagainst ndsu and SDSU.  We also need to win on the road.  That being said I don't think we are too far off. Btw, the other big question mark is who will we lose in the portal.  We will see.

Jayguin,

We must have been looking at two different teams. Our defense was pathetic. Good thing we are the national leader, or close to it, in time of possession. If we had an offense that could not move the chains, that defense would have given up 500 yards and 45+ points every game. Were there any legitimate DI players on that defense? Some of us could not see one.

If we retain those defensive coaches, we are doomed.

I agree our defense is very poor, especially the defensive scheme. Unless the defensive coaches are either replaced or coming up with better schemes, we will not improved (even with better players.)

Our offense needs to score lots of points to keep us in the game. BB has shown some signs of passing game in the last outing. I believe that was because he hurt his ankle so he couldn’t take off running. That forced him to start looking for receivers. Our coaches might be able to work with him next year to improve his passing game with both longer passes or looking for secondary receivers.
Just my opinions.

BB passing game was better the last game because he was dinged up and didn't look to run and UNI put no pressure on him.  Their defense was worse than ours.  He had time to survey the field and make decisions.
