Heard a pretty good theory the other day that once the P5 break off from the NCAA, the NCAA will realign with G5 and big FCS conferences forming a new NCAA D1. Apparently there is a conference coming up with the NCAA that could accelerate this process. I think the YSU conference issue is going to solve itself in the next 5-10 years with major CFB realignment

Remember the BCS? Did not work then and will not work now. The NCAA is king. No matter what you were taught in High school; people cannot govern themselves.

The playoff system already is it’s own thing outside the NCAA

No it is not. The CFP is a tournament, conducted by and for the NCAA. It is their way of making sure the BCS does not happen again.

The only  football championship run by the NCAA is the FCS championship.

Per the CFP website: the playoffs are run by CFP administration LLC. Which is not a$$ociated with the NCAA, the NCAA itself does not recognize an FBS national champion.

CFP Administration, LLC, manages the administration operations of the College Football Playoff. Members of the company are the 10 FBS conferences (American Athletic, Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West, Pac-12, Southeastern and Sun Belt) and the University of Notre Dame.

Revenue from the CFP doesn’t go back to the NCAA.

I agree with what you are saying, as the revenues and board are definitely not NCAA. However, the NCAA has really never had a IA/BCS champion. However they do take a huge share of the revenue and recognize the champion. The same could be said about the college basketball tourney, but the NCAA does have their name on that one. So I do apologize.
