Valparaiso, Ind. -- Senior Haley Thomas became the YSU all-time hits leader as the Yo.ungstown State softball team advanced in the Horizon League Tournament with an 8-4 win over Green Bay on Thursday afternoon at the Valparaiso University Softball Field.

The Guins, who picked up their first tournament win since 2006, improve to 29-20-1 while Green Bay was eliminated and ends its season with a 23-28 mark.

Thomas, who has 232 career hits, broke the record of 231 by Associate Head Coach Tiffany Patteson from 2003-06.

Freshman Kayla Haslett, a 2012 Horizon League All-Newcomer Team selection, scattered eight hits in four innings pitched to pick up her eighth win of the season.

Sophomore Casey Crozier threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn her third save of the year.

Trailiing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Thomas laced a two-out double to left-center field to score Sarah Gabel and Haslett to tie the game at 2-2.

After Caroline Krombach reached on an error and stole second, Thomas scored on a passed ball and senior Jordan Ingalls, who went 2-for-3, singled to left to plate Krombach and give the Guins a 4-2 lead.

Green Bay quickly tied the game at 4-4 before the Guins added one in the bottom of the third on a single by Courtney Ewing that plated Haslett, who doubled.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ingalls doubled and eventually scored on an illegal pitch to give the Guins a 6-4 advantage.

An RBI-single by Sarah Gabel and a sacrifice fly by senior Kristen Philen added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and put the Guins ahead, 8-4.

The Guins will play the winner of the UIC/Valparaiso elimination game Friday at Noon (EDT).

Game called 10-0. Loss #2. We were never even in this game. Too bad. Reminds me of the Mid-Con days. Valpo was always tough in baseball and especially softball. Still congrats on a great season to the lady pens, and I hope we can "take it to the next level" in 2013.
