Buckley leads Toledo past Youngstown State 86-77
« on: December 17, 2011, 10:25:55 PM »
TOLEDO, Ohio. (AP)—Dominique Buckley scored 21 points and Reese Holiday recorded a career-high 14 rebounds as Toledo beat Youngstown State 88-77 on Saturday night, snapping a two-game losing streak for the Rockets.

Toledo (7-3) grabbed its seventh win of the season, three more than in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns when the Rockets posted identical 4-28 records.

Toledo trailed 8-5 early in the first half before Buckley knocked down a 3-pointer, sparking the Rockets on a 26-8 run to take a 31-16 lead with 4:14 left in the first half.

Youngstown State (6-4) narrowed the lead to one, 56-55, in the second half but Toledo used another run, this time 20-9, to seal the victory.

Julius Brown scored 15 points, DeLino Dear added 13 and Rian Pearson chipped in with 12 for the Rockets.

Blake Allen led Youngstown State with 21 points and Kendrick Perry added 19.

They had a hard time defending us early, and were not shooting. The UT went on a huge run and we were sunk by half. I am very disappointed here. I expected a big win. UT shot the three so much better than we did & drove to the basket at will against us. The Rockets are not a good team.

This will most likely continue the rest of the year.  We do not have the inside help nor a bench to compete each and every night.  The rest of the season will get much tougher and the Horizon League teams are improving and we are going backwards.  Look for only 10-12 wins by years end.  I hope I am wrong.

Bad loss to a bad team.  At the start of the season I thought this was the best chance for a road win.  We got some others, but losing this game hurts.

We are getting what we are paying for.  Strollo is already on record about the expectations of athletics other than football.  I think we got a good hire in the Girls BB coach though.

YSU will always be near the bottom of the league with Coaches like Slocum, he is probably a good Div.11 coach, but to be a winner in Div.1 you need extremely good coaches. Look at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. They went out and hired Bobby Cremins a proven retired coach at Georgia Tech and look at their success. They beat Clemson and Tennessee away and have other major teams on their out of conference schedule. Cleveland State paid big bucks for their coach.

I don't think YSU will ever spend the $$ to hire a proven Div.1 BB coach or a Div.1 BB proven assistant coach. So we will continue to have lackluster win/lost records, poor schedules and poor attendance.

We do need to have more money games to help recruiting.

OleYsuFan said it all to a tee.  If they can do it why not YSU?

We play the least amount of money games than any Horizon League team yet we could sure use the money.  Doesn't make any sense at all but as long as local boy Strollo is at the top we will never see those games.  Since we lose to teams our caliber and below why not lose to a big time program and get some national recognition than can actually help recruiting.  Try telling recruits one of our big games is St. Francis while Cleveland St. plays big time programs at home.   The sorry beat rolls on!

Not trying to knock Slocum here -

I believe that if if we took a leap of faith and hired a proven D1 coach and paid the staff as needed this is what would happen. We win 20 or more games every year, we challenge for the league title, we make the big dance and oh yes the fans get excited and fill the stands every game which means we would have the extra money to pay the coaching staff.

What can we put you down for an amount of a donation? There is no money to spend. Football has it all. Why can't people understand that? There have been comments on another thread to get out of the MVC for football. What we actually need to do is get out of the Horizon in basketball. None of those schools spend any money on football, most don't even field a team. They spend it all on basketball.

Just watched the Akron game what a pathetic , inept effort. This team is truely embarassing.  YSU play was sloppy and they played like they knew from the tip off that they were an inferior product. Akron is not a great team but they are light years ahead of us in recruitment and player developement.

We have five pretty good players, but two of them are forced to play out of position.  Worse, there are no Division I players coming off the bench.  Our five players can be exciting to watch, but we cannot compete with good or even decent teams because of a hopeless lack of depth.  I really hope those two kids that we signed early can play, or it is going to get really ugly again in about two years.

Just returned after watching one of the worst performances of YSU men's bb ever.  Very pathetic, uninspired effort, full of forced and unforced turnovers, non team playing, undisciplined offense, chaotic street ball basket ball playing ever.  To have the Akron coach come on the radio in the post game interview and say - YSU appeared to be saving their starting players (substituting them out of the game) for the Robert Morris game this Thursday. He said we had 3 tough games so far and YSU was pointing toward the Robert Morris "home game".  I hope this is not correct.  It can't be.

Watching Akron play the defense that they did on us was sad.  Akron contested every shot.  Akron doubled every 3 point shooter with effort and ease.  Akron forced turnover. We had no time to rest, react, contend.  Our defense was terrible and for the most part nonexistent. Our bench (not division one at all) is sad.  I am stopping my ranting here as I don't want to say much more because I will say the wrong thing.  I apologize to all of you but it hurts to see the non existent effort that I witnessed tonight.

I hope this is the bottom moment of the season and we can look up and make something out of the rest of the season.  If not, then teams like Robert Morris and the rest of the Horizon League will eat us for lunch.  An attitude change is in order!

As you can tell I am angry and wondering what to do next.  the question is just where does our basketball team belong?  What league?  Are we serious about basketball at YSU?

We are not interested in basketball ysu!!! I would suggest the PAC as conference more suitable for our
level of commitment to our program. I hope I did't offend any PAC supporters by saying that!!
