YSU Penguin Athletics / Homecoming
« on: January 31, 2018, 08:50:59 AM »
I noticed on the schedule for this fall, Homecoming is the first Saturday in October.  Most recent Homecoming games have been the last Saturday in October, at least late Oct.  I can't see any obvious football reason for the move.  Anybody have any insight on this change?  Frankly this doesn't mean much/anything to me, but I'm just curious.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Tyler Hewlett
« on: January 30, 2018, 09:51:39 AM »
Per Vindy:

Tyler Hewlett appeared to be on the right track.

His standout performance on Austintown Fitch High School’s football team earned him a full scholarship to Youngstown State University.

He had designs on the starting running back position at YSU and a promise he could help coach at Fitch.

Then, in January 2017, he and others broke into an Austintown apartment and demanded “weed and money” at gunpoint.

Hewlett didn’t wield the gun, but his actions still earned him four years in prison Friday.

“Coach Tressel, now [YSU] President [James P.] Tressel, says, ‘Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future,” said Judge Lou A. D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. “In this case, that’s exactly what happened.”

YSU Penguin Athletics / Football Schedule
« on: December 07, 2017, 09:29:48 AM »
Does anybody know why it takes so long to get the football schedule out?  I know what day we are playing West Virginia, because it is posted on the WVU website.  I know when we are playing NDSU because it is posted on their website.  In fact I know when we are playing NDSU in 2019 because THAT is posted on their website.  I know when we are playing Maryland in 2027 because THAT is posted on their website, but as far as I can tell, we have NOTHING on our website?  Anybody have 2018 information I don't?  Anybody know why we are later than some? (many (most) are late like us)  Any reason to hold information back?

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2018 Bo's last season?
« on: November 21, 2017, 10:37:35 AM »
Is the upcoming 2018 season Bo's last at YSU?  His Nebraska contract expires in Feb. 2019 and his income would go from 150,000 to something like 22,000 per month.  I know, money isn't everything, and that's what a ton of guys say, before they take the money every time!  Somebody will bring up his daughter and Cardinal Mooney, but the family could stay until she graduates.
Bo has value in the market, no doubt.  Nebraska was 27-22 before Bo, 67-27 with him (and never less than 9 wins in a season) and now 19-18 after him.  Change the president at Nebraska and even they would want him back!
My choice as a replacement?  Carl!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Indiana State
« on: October 31, 2017, 03:18:45 PM »
Well, is everybody all pumped up for the battle against Indiana State Saturday?
Nope, me neither.  I just thought we should have a thread if anybody was interested.  Obviously we would be alone, players included, but if anybody gave a S _ _ _ they would be on this blog.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Derek Rivers
« on: September 13, 2017, 09:50:17 AM »
Derek Rivers has gone under the knife.

According to Kevin Duffy of MassLive.com, the New England Patriots top pick in the 2017 NFL Draft underwent knee surgery on Tuesday. Rivers initially suffered the injury during joint practices with the Houston Texans back in August while going through kickoff drills.

Why wait nearly a month to have surgery?

Duffy notes that this is somewhat of a common practice as folks who suffer this type of injury go through a sort of "prehab" to build strength and range of motion before surgery.

Rivers was taken in the third round (No. 83 overall) by the Patriots this past spring and was their first pick of the draft after trading their first rounder for Brandin Cooks and their second in a deal that saw another third rounder and Kony Ealy come back to Foxboro.

At Youngstown State, the defensive end showed real promise totaling 173 tackles, 56.5 tackles for a loss, 37.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in his collegiate career.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Football Practice
« on: August 09, 2017, 03:04:56 PM »
I am so very tired of reading about off field stuff.  Has anybody been to a practice?  Anything interesting, position battles, developing depth chart, etc.  How does Ricky Davis look at receiver?  Will he get any playing time?  Who looks like a kick returner?  Who is winning the CB battles, DE's?
C'mon man, let's talk football!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Eastern Washington U

Does anybody know much about this team. (any on the blog anyway)
I read the following:
YSU  27.7 PPG OPP 18.1 PPG
EWU 42.7 PPG OPP 25.4 PPG
Rush  YSU 3867 OPP 2220
        EWU 2041 OPP 2753
Pass YSU 291-169-13  169 YPG
       EWU 585-402-12 402 YPG

Looks like we can rush and score, but will need to stop best passing attack we've seen in a while to prevail, but that is just reading a few stats.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Buck Buchanan Award
« on: December 05, 2016, 12:06:09 PM »
I was disappointed to see that Derek Rivers didn't make the finalist list for the Buchanan Award.  Especially since Dylan Cole of Missouri State did.  Yes Cole made 19 total tackles against YSU, but at an average gain of 10+ yards per touch, what's the big deal?  Derek was doubled all season long and still did a great job and IMO deserves greater recognition!

I am NOT giving up on 2016 in any way, but you always need to be looking forward.  Graduation (at least expiration of eligibility) is going to slam our defense going into next year and no place more than DE.  Well, this kid looks like a step in the right direction:

General BS / Good for USA, bad for YSU
« on: June 07, 2016, 09:42:38 AM »
I am hearing a ton of talk about Sherrod Brown for Hillary's VP.  That could easily lead to YSU loosing Jim Tressel to the US Senate.

I occasionally make the case that the football and mbb programs suffer with the penalty of having downtown Youngstown OH to offer as a location.  I'm pretty sure none of us vacation in Y-Town, so it's a point I'm sure we can agree is pretty negative.
I still believe this is true, but it doesn't seem to affect things like men’s golf, softball, women’s bb both track & tennis programs and cross country.
Anybody have any observations/theories to offer?
The other point make occasionally on this blog is the local talent pool is too think and we have to recruit nationallly.  That appears true in football and mbb too, but again, not in any of the other sports listed.  I don't get it.
