YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: The Defense Also Let Us Down...
« on: September 07, 2015, 01:14:14 AM »
It's always great when someone who is wrong admonishes someone else about being factual. Sigh.

Except im not wrong, but then again i dont expect anyone in here to know how to spell the word football let alone know a single thing about it. Theres a reason why we hated playing for ysu "fans", Most uneducated people ive ever met when it comes to football and only show up when YSU wins.

Most fan bases won't show up if the team doesn't win. The Cleveland Browns might be the lone exception.

Vindy ... didn't even cover last saturday's scrimmage... Piss poor.

As usual, you're wrong. But since you're admittedly not subscribing, how would you know?

It really helps to have the facts on your side when you try to rip someone or something. Otherwise, well, you just look silly.

Here is a link to Joe Scalzo's story from Sunday's Vindicator. Hint: He was at the scrimmage, for anyone — like ysufan0505 — unable to figure that out.

Ed, I think the concern over the story isn't the story itself that angers some posters on this board.  I believe it's the local attitude of High School football always trumping YSU football that irritates people.  Every night  for the past two weeks some of the local media have been outlining area high school football teams, team by team.  How about instead break down all the transfers that are scheduled to report to camp and the impact they can make at YSU since there is so much "hype" of Pelini returning to coach the Penguins.  Instead of hearing about the offensive tackle from Labrae, it's just awful.  High school football use to be a huge event but seeing as though local schools are struggling to get kids on the team, the question I must ask is how important is high school football then?

Fair enough, JP. I think you're mainly referring to the TV stations. To be fair, they pretty much have to spread out their previews over a period of weeks because of the number of teams and their limited time within each newscast. We're able to put our prep football stuff in two print products and online, so it may not seem as omnipresent.

I think you will find that we'll provide plenty of solid, informative YSU coverage with camp opening this week. In the next couple of weeks, most of our prep stuff will be done behind the scenes as we prepare to roll out the Blitz preview and Faces of Football sections and get the online stuff together.

First I did not see the paper, canceled the Vindy long ago. I am guessing that if a high school player in Columbus went to Michigan he would be given the same, yep hold your breathe on that one.

This is real simple Youngstown State - Youngstown Vindy, anyone not see the connection? Hey best of luck to the kid, really, but second or third page.
You're going to compare YSU, Kent State and The Vindicator to Ohio State, Michigan and The Dispatch? When was the last time YSU and KSU played? Other than the Penguins and Golden Flashes occasionally chasing the same recruits, they are no longer rivals. The dynamics at play in Youngstown vs. Columbus are not comparable at all.

But to answer your question, sure, if a Columbus kid was good enough and received national recognition, why wouldn't The Dispatch write about him even if he went to Michigan? You don't think The Plain Dealer ever featured Desmond Howard or Elvis Grbac when they were at Michigan? I'm sure there have been Columbus kids who went to Michigan and still made The Dispatch from time to time. But I guess by your standards, no media in the Valley should ever have done anything on Mario Manningham, Fitzgerald Toussaint or De'Veon Smith because they had the audacity to play for the Wolverines.

Also ... you do know that YSU camp did not even start until today, right? The dog days of summer are made for those kind of feel-good local stories. If you have a problem with such a story, frankly, it says more about you than it does about the paper you admit you don't even read.

I don't think there is a conspiracy just don't want to give the competition any advantage.  Do you really think the Beacon would post a big pic and article of one of our local guys and talk about YSU football as the lead article on Sunday. Anyways I do think coverage has been a lot more informative and inciteful.

Thanks. Passing that on to Joe.

That said, I'm not sure how a feel-good piece about Jordan Italiano being named the smartest player in college football gives Kent State an advantage over YSU or anyone else. It is what it is — a nice story about a local kid doing well. Jordan is a good kid who deserved some publicity.

I know the SE at the ABJ. I'll ask him if they'd do a story on, say, a kid from Hoban or SVSM being named the smartest kid in college football while playing at YSU. But I suspect I know what his answer will be.

I am glad they are writing about the kid,  But Youngstown Football program was like 3rd fiddle on the weeks biggest paper.  You have 2 of college footballs best Coaches and we play in the toughest FCS football Conference, do some research and write about that.

http://www.vindy.com/news/2015/aug/02/ysu-football-pelinis-promise-all-eyes-on/

Joe Scalzo had a 20-inch story and a lengthy blog entry over the weekend. Links provided. And you're complaining because someone else got their picture on B1? Yes, because YSU football players never get their photos in the paper.

What else, exactly, needs to be researched and written about before anyone even arrives for camp? Did you read any of Joe's stuff?

All due respect, get back to me after camp actually begins and then tell me we aren't doing enough. Nothing much, aside from rumors about transfers, has happened since the end of spring workouts and we've still had stories — including Bo's talk with the Curbstone Coaches last week.

You can't say, with a straight face anyway, that the Penguins get no coverage.

But here's the question I have: Why, if there is a story about another player or another program, is it considered an affront to YSU? That makes no sense.

FYI, the Italiano story was originally scheduled to run Saturday. It was held a day because of space purposes. There is no vast right-wing (or left-wing, for that matter) conspiracy to prop up Kent State football. We just like local stories. All kinds of local stories.

And that, as they say, is the end of the story.

How dare that kid pick another school to attend. We should never write anything about them after they graduate high school if they don't go to YSU. The heck with them.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Interesting to note: The last time the job came open, I thought YSU should have looked at Kevin Mackey. No less an authority than Larry Bird, who'd hired Mackey as a scout with the Indiana Pacers, gave me 20 minutes on the phone on a Saturday afternoon. Bird talked about what a great job Mackey was doing and how he'd paid his debt for the mistakes he made and deserved another chance as a college coach. I wrote as much in a column, but as far as I know, Mackey was never considered. The style of play Mackey employs would have put butts in the seats at Beeghly from the start and the name recognition in northeastern Ohio would also have helped the program. But hey, what do I know?

Also interesting to note: Disgraced former Baylor coach Dave Bliss is back in the game. But Kevin Mackey could never get another shot?

Glad you're still checking in.  Does anyone in administration or any of the big money donors give a rat's behind about men's basketball, or are they like most of the Mahoning Valley and apathetic towards it?

I can't speak for any big-money people. I just don't get invited to those parties all that often. My view is that the administration cares, but the money isn't there to buy out a coach and then pay two guys, especially when the idea is perhaps to sweeten the contract down the road.

The defections from the program are troubling, though. I would think at some point YSU has to talk about what's happening and why.

I agree. I think this team is a hybrid of sorts. It has the best aspects of a Tressel Ball team and an Urban-SEC team. And they're so young.

As for Barrett vs. Jones ... great problem to have. But like things often do, I think this will work itself out one way or another.

As far as Urban's health and why he left Florida, I can't offer much on that aside from what I've read. I saw something the other day that suggested some type of falling out with the AD down there. Who knows?

As to not caring, well that is true to a point. However, I live and work in Columbus, so it is prudent to follow the Bucks for work conversations and such. Also, my daughter and son-in-law graduated from OSU. As to Meyer being a better coach that coach T ...IMO could never happen and will never happen. Maybe you are the one that is blind as your alphabet only contains the letters X, O, W, and L.

I do not expect you to understand why I feel as I do. To me football (or any sport) is more than a game ...much more. A season is more than a sum of games. I did make a mistake. I did always take my daughter to the spring game (when it was free or $5) and I did go to the YSU games in the Shoe. To better understand why I feel the way that I do, here are a couple of comments:

1) If you are into military history at all; then you will know that Irwin Rommel was perhaps the greatest field commander of the 20th-century. His successes in WWI and WWII were elite. He pushed the allies around. He became very disillusioned with his leaders by the 1940's. Now had Rommel decided to join the British in the fight ...would you put him in charge of the British army? NO ..,you are going to greatly respect him and study his tactics; with the goal of defeating him. This is what happened when the US entered WWII and General Patton was in-charge. I see Urban Meyer (while at UofF) as the enemy that defeated us. I expected coach Tressel to study coach Meyer's UofF team and learn how to defeat him. Eventually he got his win vs. Arkansas.

2. Another example. After Jim Tressel was hired at OSU, I became somewhat of an authority at the office. Everyone wanted to know how Tressel coached, what is he all about, etc. NOt that I am some football expert, or my company's savior; but suddenly, people realized that Youngstown was not a bunch of people crouching on sideboards with Thompson sub-machine guns.

When we were at a meeting just prior to the first YSU vs OSU game, I was asked if I actually expect YSU to win the game. Clearly OSU fans saw it as a chance to reward YSU and a warm-up for OSU. You know, we do the same thing with our "money games". My answer was "absolutely" ...and I meant it. You can call me a prude; but I expected Heacock and his staff to put a plan in place to beat OSU. If we lost ...we lost.

Look at last year. did you think we had a chance to beat NDSU? On paper, we might as well have been playing OSU, because NDSU was that much better than YSU. Well I expected to loose. Imagine, a person that expects his team to beat the defending national champions in IA/FBS, but lose to the defending champs of I-AA/FCS? This is when I realized that YSU football needed to change. We are taking a big risk with Pelini and I hope it pays off.

I think if not for the tattoo scandal or whatever you want to call it, Jim Tressel would have taken Ohio State in a similar direction to what Urban Meyer has in terms of how the team was built. He had already started to do that. Clearly, that Florida team was a very bad matchup for the Buckeyes. Even before the end of JT's run in Columbus, you could see the gap was closing between OSU and the supposedly faster teams. The Rose Bowl against Oregon showed that and the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas was another example of it.

JT and Urban are vastly different guys, but they're both winners. OSU was lucky to have JT for a decade and it is lucky to have Urban now.

It was great to see  President (Coach) Tressel at the NC last night. One thing that stands out for me of the difference between Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel is with 28 seconds left in the game on the two yard line Tressel would have had Jones take a knee and end the game at 35-20.  Bad move  Urban!  Jim Tressel is and always will be a Class Act.

Believe me, I am as far from an Urban Meyer fan as one can get. I see his hiring by OSU as nothing short of  traitorous. However, OSU started the drive with over 3-minutes on the clock and Oregon called all three of their timeouts. Not much choice.

I agree on Tressel's class though. It was he trying to run 6-minutes off the clock that used to drive me insane back in the 80's and 90's. He needed to score many times.

Traitorous? What?

Ohio State hiring an Ohio guy with championship credentials is traitorous?

Why? Because Florida beat OSU in the BCS title game in 2007?

Who would have been a better hire under the circumstances?

Yes. Traitorous.
Yes.
More than that, but that ranks right up at the top of the list.
Anyone at all.

To sum up my feelings for Meyer and the hire. He can stay at OSU for the next 10-years, win 9 conference titles and 6 national championships and he will still be the best coach UofF ever had. He will NEVER be anything more. There is more to the game of football than salaries and win/loss. Besides I am a Guins fan & really have little concern for OSU. My daughter graduated from OSU and I bought her the student package for 5-years and I never went. I live 5-minutes from the shoe & drive past it every fall Saturday ...on the way to watch my team play.

I am a YSU fan. That is all. Every sport they play is my favorite team. My only team.

That is why the name of this site is not osubuckeyes.com          ;)

If you don't care at all about OSU, then it shouldn't bother you that they hired Urban Meyer.

Right?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: BO PELINI: THE NEW HEAD COACH AT YSU
« on: December 10, 2014, 02:29:21 PM »
And a guy who has made the playoffs 3 teams and been bounced in the 1st round every single time. No thanks.
You do understand YSU hasn't made the playoffs since 2006 and that was the only time it's happened since 2000, right?

I do, but besides a pay increase and coaching in the best conference in FCS.... He's still coaching in the FCS! He had a good run at Wake Forest as DC, congrats. I heard he has a job offer from Vandy to be their DC. Why wouldn't he take that job? I just feel like Tressel and Strollo really need to make a big splash. Not saying Pelini, but a bigger than than Dean Hood, sorry.

Obviously, if Pelini wants to be here and the financial details can be worked out, it will be his job. But aside from Bo, who qualfies as a big splash for you guys? If Pelini is out of the equation, you should be more concerned about hiring the right guy.
